This was on the Open Beta boards. I have added a couple of my own question though. Credit for most of the questions goes to MecKill (OP), Caduryn, Wintersdark, KATMAN(Most of the Pirate questions), Barril, DagnyTaggart, Mad Jack Ashton, and taolurker. I have gone through and cleaned them up slightly for spelling, grammar, and formatting.

General Questions

Q: How do I take a screenshot?
A: "P". Also F11 will toggle the UI for better screenshots.

Q: I lost my wind circle, help!
A: Pressing \ will toggle the wind indicator. There is an option in the Preferences->Interface that does this as well.

Q: I lost my firing arcs, help!
A: Pressing ' will toggle the firing arcs. There is an option in the Preferences->Interface that does this as well.

Q: Do other players see the name of my ship?
A: No

Q: What does DB stand for?
A: Doubloons, it's the currency in game. There is only one type to deal with instead of the various coinages (copper, silver, gold) used is some other games you may be familiar with.

Q: What does AVCOM stand for?
A: Avatar Combat. It takes place when you board another ship or are in missions on land. It is also often referred to as swashbuckling.

Q: What does SoL or SOL stand for?
A: Ship of the Line. They are level 50 ships reserved for Naval Officers and Pirates that capture them from Naval Officers.

Q: How do I turn in a bug report?
A: type /support while in the game.

Q: I offered what the last person paid at the Auction house but it says my offer is not high enough, why?
A: the price the AH gives you for an item is only what the last guy before you spent for that item. Most likely, that guy got the last of whatever you were looking for at that price.

Q: What do the different deed colors mean?
A: Red=Warship, Blue=Scout, and Green=Trade

Q: Can I get another hot bar? Move a window? Turn on wind gauge and firing arcs?
A: Hit ESC, Preferences, scroll down a little, it’s all there.

Q: I just talked to someone. Do I have to type their name again?
A: Press your BACKSPACE key.

Q: Who gives me the Economy starting tutorial?
A: The quest is initiated by any auctioneer.

Q: Why can't I talk to the NPC/Pick up item, in this mission?
A: The little red cross-hair under your name means you are in combat mode. You may have to wait a minute or so for it to go away.

Q: At what level should I upgrade my ship?
A: When your current ship ceases to help you advance in the game, when you can afford it, or just feel like it.

Q: Where do I get a parrot, eye patch, Jacket, Peg leg, etc.?
A: They are quest rewards.

Q: How do I shoot my gun?
A: Learn the gun skill from the swashbuckling trainer when you have an available skill point.

Q: How/where do I get the thing I just bought on the auction house??
A: The auction house window has a retrieve tab and it tells you what port stuff is in if it doesn't get placed directly into your inventory or warehouse.

Q: Where can I buy smelling salts?
A: Smelling salts are player crafted, and can be bought on the auction house.

Q: Oh my Lord! An enemy (either PC or NPC) much higher than me just pulled me into an instance! What do I do?
A: You can either fight them, or alternatively, keep moving away from them WITHOUT SHOOTING or OFFENSIVE SKILLS being invoked, for 2 minutes, after which the instance will allow you to exit back to the OS.

Q: How do I turn on/off my PvP flag?
A: Any port-captain (in any port, and not the harbor master, garrison commander, or longboat coxswain!) will allow you to turn your voluntary PvP flag on/off. This does NOT prevent you from being gank-able in PvP zones!

Q: How do I change my difficulty ratings?
A: Any port-captain (in any port and not the harbor master, garrison commander, or longboat coxswain!) will allow you to change your difficulty ratings. The default, and the lowest, is Captain. The highest, and most challenging, is Admiral. For groups, ONLY the leader's ratings will matter.

Q: What is the best ship for level x?
A: For the best resource on ships and their levels, hit F1, then scroll nearly all the way to the bottom, click on "Ships: Deeds" and figure out what ships would be best for you by looking at individual stats, based on what you can captain, and all that.

Q: What do I do with Pennants?
A: Go to your Nation's Capital to turn them in for ship deeds, ammo, nails or XP.

Q: Where is my Nation Capital?
A: Port Royal (Britain), San Juan (Spain), Pointe-a-Pitre (France), Tortuga (Pirates)

Q: What do I do with Derelict ships?
A: You can claim them IF you are level 5 or better using a Captain's Skill and IF they do not have something like (MINOR) in their name. Sometimes you will get a Pennant when you claim them.

Q: What does it take to start PvP? Explain, please!
A: Okay, this is a long one, so I split it into relevant paragraphs. It is probably all skewed (as my thought-processes generally are) but here goes:

There are 2 modes of PvP. Pirate PvP, and FFA (or free-for-all).

To put a town into contention, you need to defeat NPC enemies affiliated to the owner nation of a town within a set radius around the town (believed to be 50 miles, give or take a few). You will see on the main map (M key) or the local map (L key) when you mouse over that town what contention is currently at. Once this contention reaches a certain limit (6,000 I believe), there is a HUGE shaded red circle that appears around the town (visible on local and main maps) within which Pirate PvP is allowed. Once the contention reaches the NEXT limit (8,000 points I think), there is a smaller SOLID red circle within the big semi-transparent circle that materializes. This would be the FFA zone. The pirate PvP zone increases in size as well. Once the contention reaches 10,000, a port battle commences (and is discussed in detail in the PvP forums... somewhere).

Pirate PvP: This zone is where pirates can attack and be attacked by any nationals. However, the nationals cannot fight amongst themselves (unless their PvP flags are enabled). Privateers can also get a skill that allows them to act the same as pirates in this area.

FFA (Free for all) PvP: As the name suggests, any player can attack any other player within this zone.

Q: How do I make DB so I can buy a ship?
A: Do all the missions that you can find and board every ship in those missions. You will end up with around 150K by level 30. Also, do the Economy Tutorial and sell that ship deed reward for 2900 DB to the Scrap Dealer.

Q: How do I build a ship?
A: You can't. It takes three people to make a small ship, six for a large ship.

Q: How am I to complete these missions if my ship is a piece of junk?
A: Buy crates of Canister shot and ship outfitting and use them.

Q: I only have seven building and zero empty lots, bug?
A: Do you have another character with buildings? Do you have a shipyard? Do you have buildings at another port? All three of these can use up some to the ten lots that you get per SERVER, NOT CHARACTER.

Q: What level do I have to be to do some PVP?
A: Level 1. Just listen to the bigger ships and you should do ok. Don't forget that you are in a free ship that will be replaced for free if you get sunk.

Q: When can I buy my first ship?
A: I would suggest at level 8. The Bermuda Sloop is a nice group ship and should cost from 3K to 7K. The Mediator Cutter is a nice solo ship and costs around 5K to 10K. Navy and Privateers will want the Refit ships at level 15, 25, 35. They cost around 15K, 45K and 60K
(Answer for pirates): At level 5 you can start capturing ships from NPCs that will take you all the way to level 50. Players from other nations sometimes offer pirates even better ships to capture.

English Questions

Q: Where is the best place to buy items?
A: Ros for noob level items and Bartica or Port Royale, for ship making items.

Q: I have completed all the missions in Jenny Bay. Where to next?
A: Ros, GeorgeTown, Les Hattes and Bartica

Spanish Questions

Q: I have completed all the missions in Vera Cruz. Where to next?
A: Barilla, Villa Hermosa, and Campeche. One of the last missions in Vera Cruz sends you to meet an NPC in Barilla.

Pirate Questions

Q: I've finished my quests in Marsh Harbour, where should I go?
A: Harbour Island, Morgan's Bluff, Cat Island, Whitby; then out to Jacob's Clock and surrounding area.

Q: What's this scavenge I hear about?
A: Every 5 levels, your pirate trainer will give you a quest. You have to do each in order to open up the next, so you have to do the level 5 quest before you can do the level 10 quest, even if you are level 10. Scavenge is a skill that is a reward for your level 10 quest, and is used on Derelict Ships to gain you extra doubloons and ship components. You should get this quest done the moment you hit level 10, in order to scavenge all those Derelicts! It's free money!

Q: How do I Capture ships?
A: Only level 5 or higher Pirates can capture a ship. Nationals can claim ship for Pennants.

Q: Can I sell captured ship deeds?
A: yes

Q: What is a careening camp, and how do I build it?
A: Careening camps are pirate only structures that take up TWO lots, and allow pirates to haul in hulks and turn them into a ship (three deeds from one manufacturing cycle). The careening camp deed can be obtained from the Brethren Quartermaster in Tortuga (near the eastern-most longboat coxswain) in exchange for 10 captured pennons. Note that ships built this way are more expensive than FT ships, and require more resources to manufacture. The careening camp is not a proper shipyard, and cannot make ship outfitting (as far as I know).

Hulks themselves are obtained via scavenging (chance-based) level 15 or above (need confirmation here) enemies. The hulks are: minor, major, warship, superior. Each one is used for different kinds of ships. All other materials needed must be manufactured / acquired.

Q: I boarded and defeated an enemy x levels above me. Can I capture their ship?
A: No. You can only capture ships that are your level or below.

Q: What does one durability on a captured ship mean?
A: Once you lose it, it's gone along with all the non-combat cargo that you had in it (hulks / shipwright materials / raw materials / manufactured goods).

Q: How do I increase the durability of my captured ship?
A: You need to have deeds of the EXACT SAME type and ship that you can either buy or get from scavenging ships of the same type (~5% chance). Then, make sure that these deeds are in your cargo hold, and go to the harbor-master of any town. Select your ship. The "Refill Durability" button on the top right will be click-able. Click this as many times as the number of deeds you have (but no more than the max limit, which is 5, I believe) to fill the durability up.

Q: How do I acquire new ships?
A: At level 5, you will auto-get a skill called "Take Command". This skill is NOT put on your hot bar, so you will need to open your skills (Y key by default) and then drag the skill to your hot bar and use it on derelicts that are not flagged "invalid". This skill has a 2 hour cool-down timer. Some ships, when captured, will flag you as permanently PvP enabled! (Non-pirate class-specific ships such as traders galleons, Naval ships, SoL's, privateer refits are some examples).

Q: Why can I not capture 'X' derelict?
A: Some ships are special (and marked as such). These include ships with "Fallback", "(minor)", or similar in their name, as well as ships that are explicitly marked as invalid. These cannot be captured. Secondly, if the ship is higher than you in level, you cannot capture it. There is no point of a level 5 pirate with a 50 Pommern now, is there? Thirdly, you should have room in your dry-dock. The dry-dock can hold up to 4 ships (for pirates) along with the ships you are currently in (so 5 total). If the dock is full, no more capturing.

Q: Can I sell captured ships?
A: No. You can only scuttle them. You can sell deeds that you get from scavenge though, just not the intact ships.

Q: Why can I not scavenge 'X' derelict?
A: The derelict is marked as "(minor)" or "fallback". Hence, it is special and cannot be scavenged (Need confirmation for scavenge-inability of fallbacks).

Q: Who gives me the mission for the Scavenge skill quest?
A: Any pirate skill trainer in any town.

i'll add a question that isnt 'fully' answered anywhere.

What do the colour of the mission names in the mission log actually mean?

some say green = level lower and brown = same level. others say green = same level and brown = higher.

-------------------------------------------------------------

another question.

i was in a mission, onboard a ship, fighting the crew when suddenly i find myself back in Jenny Bay? Bug?

Log doesnt say i died, log doesnt say my ship was destroyed. infact log doesnt say anything except all teh xp i was getting.

Take them to your nation's capital, find your headquarters building and talk to the Exchequer. He'll help you with your pennants.

Did this change at all? Some of the guys in my Society are saying 10 lots per server should have been brought in as there was a major concern about this during beta.

I do have a noobie question though. I am a level 3 pirate, and when I see the Port Captain and pull up my ship diagram I have the boxes on the left for guns, and storage. On the righthand pane I have some Cannon ammo and also some Rum that I got from looting a ship I sunk.

When I try dragging any of these onto the lefthand pane it says that I cannot do that. The ship is a basic ship the first one you get for free in the game. I do not understand how to load stuff on the ship or why I get the error message.

Is there a list of non-emote chat commands anywhere (like to display fps, lag, or time played, e.g)? Does this game even have any?

I'm actually kind of amazed there's no lag display in the default UI to begin with. I imagine it's in there somewhere...

You need to look at the ship size and the upgrades that you are trying to install, this answer is probably a little late because have probably figured it out.

Ammo and consumables (such as rum) can not be dragged and dropped onto your ship's the General and area-specific upgrade slots. You simply need ammo in your Ship inventory (press I -> select Ship tab to view what's in your ship's hold) to use, and consumables dragged and dropped onto your action bar to use.

Mysterio and joseph_lewis, after playing last night I think I understand now. The one thing that sucks is that I had some items on board my ship that I received from missions and sunk my ship. I lost them in a battle, I accidentally clicked on a merchant ship and got worked. I'm still learning how to move inventory around but I am getting the hang of it slowly.

I'm still learning how to move inventory around but I am getting the hang of it slowly.

In order to move inventory from one of your ship's hold to another, you have to speak with the Dock Master (think that's his name) and both ships have to be in the current port. Essentially, if a ship isn't docked in your current port, you can interact with it, which makes sense.

I have a question. In the open sea if your pvp flagged is there anyway to attack other players that are transporting goods/sailing around, even if the other player isnt flagged? I heard that both of you have to be flagged. If that is the case then what is the risk of transporting goods around besides maybe being attacked by NPC's.

That is true; the risk comes when you have to transport goods into Red Circles; then, depending upon the unrest, either Pirates and Privateers, or anyone in general can attack you. If there's no red, there really is no risk.

Correct. I believe it's a design decision to keep the economy balanced and ensure players use the AH/trade with others to manufacture their products.

Semidar
02-15-2008, 10:56 AM
the limitation is fair, imo. Else people would have multiple characters w/ monopolies in each industry and not need the interaction w/ other players. The player-written FAQ used to state that the limit is 10 lots per acct, which is a lot more restrictive.

A single player COULD get into the ship making biz if they really wanted to on a small scale -- enough to support their own consumption. Cycle through industry types and build a stockpile of materials. On some servers, the raw and/or manufactured materials are reasonably priced to simply pay the extra margin vs bothering w/ setup costs and time, so it IS possible to realize building your own ship w/ some planning and forethought. Not like ya are gonna hit L50 in several weeks playing solo, and if you're playing w/ a group, you're likely to be collaborating w/ them re: ship building to not hafta worry about trying to be a supplier/producer of EVERYTHING, ya know?

jmoore, just open up your skills window (Y or one of the icons in the lower right hand corner) and drag and drop the skills on your bar. I've been playing for a few days, and I can't seem to figure out what determines the ranges for cannons on a ship.

Whenever I enter ship comabt, the enemy ship can always fire 2x or more as far as me no matter what type of ammo I use. Because of this, they get in 2 or 3 shots on me before I can even get off one. And in order to close the distance to get in range, they always hit me in my front.

Am I missing something here? How can a level 1 ship out-range me no matter what level I am or what ship I am navigating? I currently am a 12 pirate, and this happens no matter what ship I am fighting or piloting.

If you mouse over your loaded gun battery (upper left ship widget) it will tell you your range with the current ammo.

Range depends on cannon size (larger shoot farther) and ammo (round shot go the farthest). You can also buy various special cannons: some do more damage up close, others have longer than usual range, et cetera...

BTW, I'm playing a 18th level naval officer and I'm still in a bermuda sloop with tiny (4lb?) cannons that have short range and are usually out ranged by my opponents. That doesn't stop me from battering them to kindling though :)

I look forward to finally getting a Mediator Cutter with more and bigger guns!

Certain ships can only be sailed by specific classes. When a pirate captures and sails one of these ships, he's always flagged for PvP. Want to lose the PvP flag? Sail a ship that can be sailed by any class. :yar:

Just a heads up.. The Colors right now are more or less irrelevant. Mission difficulty ranges greatly even between missions of the same "color" and AvCom are usualy much easier then others.

Also remeber its your ship that matters, not your level. You could be level but if your sailing a bermuda sloop you are going to get sunk. :) The color system does not take this into account, and many missions are very diffuclt because they assume you have a ship equal to your level.. Even if none are available.

An earlier post says F1 will pull up a list of ships with stats, etc.
Is there something similar for at least NPC/Mission offerred personal gear like swords, pistols, coats, boots, and gloves?

Also, I seem to be blind or something--is there a library section of this main site with factual game details by category? Lots of excellent posts and I see where players have put together many great guides--but what about on this main site?

How do I transfer something to a friend in-game? I've looked but it's not obvious to me. With 2 family members starting the game after me, I may have stuff they can use.

Thanks,

Right click on another toon in-game and "trade" is one of the choices that comes up. Can be done between ships on the open sea as well.

((I'm learning!))

I searched all around and can't seem to find info on:

What is a Mark of Trade? How do you get then and what do you do with them?
What is a Mark of Victory? How do you get them and what do you do with them?
What is a Line Ship Bundle or LSB? What structures are needed to support making LSB's?

If you know of others that I didn't list, please list them! Thanks :)
