View Full Version : Attacked by a player, But I wasn't flagged

I was jumped by a player as I traveled the open sea. He was flagged, I was not. My ship, a Limburg Flute I was running cargo in, is listed as invalid for PVP. I logged a support ticket about it, but I doubt I will get my ship, or its hold full of cargo back. And I think he knew that he could exploit something, because he made a beeline right for me when he saw me. Am I misinterpreting the PVP rules?
FLS, whats going on here?

Invalid ship PVP means that the ship you are in you are not supposed to be in. Meaning limburg Flute you are not a freetrader. If a Freetrader/Privateer/Pirate is in a 1st rate then you are automatically flagged when piloting the ship since it is for a Naval Officer Career. The lower lvl ships don't have an issue with this. But as you get into bigger ships they are specific to a career. If you go outside of what your career path allows it flags you invalid ship type PVP.
I think the icon should not say invald ship PVP though, it is kind of decieving. It should say you are not a Freetrader/Naval Officer/Privateer/Pirate, you are currently flagged PVP while piloting this ship.

So I can't pilot a trade ship without being open to attack? (I'm a pirate by the way)

That is correct. Disadvantage of being a pirate. Your advantage is that you didnt have to pay 25000 db for it.

Ok, so then my suggestion is to change the wording on the icon. "Invalid PvP" made me think the ship wasn't allowed to fight in PvP combat. Maybe change the wording to "Invalid Ship Type - PvP Flag" or something. Was a little misleading and now I'm out a lot of cargo.
Anyway, thanks for the answer, even though it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

I would recommend ALWAYS having your PvP flag on when sailing an invalid ship. That +10% OS speed can save you.

Which I may have done had I not been confused by the icon. I will stick to running trips of 200 cargo instead of the 445 runs. Never played a pirate in beta, so I'm back on the learning curve.

No way bro! That 720 cargo Altas Bark is a time saver. Next time you need to move 700 oak logs from Santa Clara to MT you will with you had that invalid PvP ship.

Yeah should say "This ship is INVALID for pirates, you can be attacked anywhere".

I`m playing as a pirate and yesterday i was able to initiate a fight with a freetrader who was not flagged - he had this crossed swords above his ship though.

The swords means they are targeting you.

How can I tell which ship is for which career? I'm a Privateer and a new player, so I just buy whatever ship that is good and I can afford. Currently, I am sailing the Bermuda Sloop that I got from turning in 25 commendations. I also got a merchant ship as a quest reward for completing my economy quest line, if I sail in that will I automatically be flagged for PVP in the Open Sea? Lastly, I bought a Postillion Frigate from my manufacturing partner, for when we go live, is that a Naval Officer ship or a Privateer ship or can it be both? I thought I understood how PVP works, but now I am confused. I want to participate in contested port battles, but not be flagged for PVP anywhere in the Open Sea. At least until I get more experience, anyways (even then I may decide not to).
I understood when I created my Privateer that I would not be able to sail the largest ships in the game, but that is okay. The part that gets confusing is trying to tell the difference between Privateer ships and Naval Officer ships. Both are in the profession of killing people, although I understand that Privateers also went after enemy merchant ships and needed something fast to run them down.

How is this a disadvantage? NOs can't sail these at all.

Then you have to ship ironwood and fir to Santa Clara.

Naval Officers are not supposed to sail them since you can choose to create a freetrader. The disadvantage is for pirates not Naval officers/Privateers. Why? Because as a Naval Officer/Privateer you have a choice to create a freetrader. A pirate can create a pirate and a pirate, with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th character options as pirates. Since leveling in the game is a fairly easy thing to do it shouldn't be rocket science which character if you are Spanish/British/French that you should create a freetrader who does your economy stuff.
If you do not want to create a freetrader and you want to have your Naval Officer/Privateer do your economy buildings, please note that you either will have to take many trips, plan to be flagged PVP while piloting a cargo vessel, or just sell your goods in the port they are made.
The color of the deeds are how you tell ship types apart. Red = warship = Naval Officer. Blue = scout = Privateer. Green = cargo = Freetrader. As a pirate you have the ability to control any ship in the game. Check the requirements of the ship in the F1 documentation under ship deeds. The earlier ships even though they are color coded like green for a Dolpyhn Ketch do not have the requirement on the ship deed of have to be a freetrader, but you can easily tell that for combat/scouting a dolphyn ketch is not the way to go. If the ship deed does not state that it has a requirement of a Naval Officer/Privateer/Freetrader than when a Pirate takes it they shouldn't be flagged Invalid ship PVP.
I still think they should change the wording in the icon, since most people the first time they see it they think hey, I cannot do PVP but thats ok I can use this ship for cargo.

You're not on Anitga by any chance? If so I think I sailed right past you earlier. I moved towards you to attack but decided against it as I had a full hold of goods ready for market. I guess this explains why you didn't try to evade. :D

I think when you both consent to the battle you don't need to be PvP flagged. I think?

I am and I was attacked by a few freetraders. One FT I got like 60 limestone and some iron. You loose your booty to the infamous Captain Stilgar Bloodwing?

ONLY pirates can sail ships that will make them PvP flagged. As a nation character, the game will not allow you to captain a ship you are not supposed too. So you will never be PvP flagged unless you do it yourself.
For pirates it is any FT cargo ship, and rated Navy ships.

Thanks for clarifying the color of the ship deeds, I did not know what the colors ment.

Just to point out i too was confused by that Invalid PvP icon, until i was attacked in OS doing a cargo run (fortunately on my way back from AH after dropping cargo). Its just too ambiguous. Confuses simple people like me.

Yea I found this out the hard way too. The largest hold a pirate can legitimatly use is a Heavy Ketch 200 cargo. There is 1 larger at 220 cargo but you need to collect 15 victory points to get it. Not worth the effort IMHO.

What gets me is the number of Pirates running around in Merchant ships without their voluntary PvP flag on. If you are going to sail an Invalid ship, you might as well get the 10% OS speed buff that the voluntary flag gives you, as you are flagged anyway.

You would be better off in a sloop imo. Faster. Better wind angles.
