With Diplomacy, you can only understand, but not speak the language. If your prey or attacker doesn't have it, it's useless. It ends up being like some strange variation on the confession puzzle.

so you can see what nasty things the other nations are saying about you in area.

If they have that skill as well, then you can both talk to each other. Otherwise, it's a 1-sided conversation, and you can see their pleas, cries, nasty comments about you, etc, and could help in a surrender if you choose to do so.

That is, I'm assuming the other classes other than Pirate can also get Diplomacy.

Except I think most people use nation over area....

in beta it was amazing how many people would betray their numbers/position/plans. think of it as a spy tool. they don't know you have it as long as you don't respond.

I have diplomacy more in the hope that I can get other nations to communicate, just hard to initiate when they don't understand what i say and can only emote at them

Same here...I hate when games don't allow chat amongst enemies. The "harrassment" reason is B.S. imo, and isn't tolerated (can be reported) anyway--besides, less harrassment between enemies means more harrassment with the same faction.

In other mmos that allowed this, some of the most interesting people I met ingame and in RL were my enemies. Not all people are jack***es.

By not taking diplomacy it saves me from having to use my ignore list. They are the enemy, I have no reason to talk to them, nor listen to what they might spout.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Pirates were also businessmen! If we were able to talk to the enemy, who knows what kind of surrender deals we could receive, rather than just blowing them out of the water every single time.

where do pirates learn diplomacy?

Pirates learn it in Tortuga. Every national capitol has a General Trainer that can teach Diplomacy.

am i right in thinking Diplomacy (and the advanced Crew Focus) are learned using career skill points ? so is it not also a waste of those ?

Mabsor, not a waste, just an alternative path you can choose

Mad-eye, I'll keep an eye out for you :) If I wind up getting attacked by you at least :P

it's for free traders from what I gather. Or anyone who really wants to get into grand commerce.

Rum trumps a sinking ship! Remember that when facing a pirate, yarr!

I was messing around in a Hornet yesterday with my PvP flag on....

Got jumped by 3 L21 pirates players heh :)

It's times like that I wish they had diplomacy so I could tell them my hold was empty :D :)

Maybe the Devs don't want to deal with thousands of tickets reporting "LOL PWNT U NOOB"?

Yeah, attitude in PvP is what turns alot of people, who otherwise might enjoy it, off.

I kinda like how Diplomacy is set up. If you want it, it's there. If you run into someone else that has it, you can make deals (of course you can still conduct diplomacy out of game just fine). It's useful for spies and roleplayers and businessmen mostly. Maybe some Society leaders will take it for grand diplomatic reasons as well.

Certainly is going to be a focus skill for my character.
