View Full Version : Ugh... PvP Is Ruined?

So we enter a battle... not bad a few Pirates on a few French. But then the boarding begins and what do we all see... the French players running circles around the ship firing their guns. They don't swing their swords a single time, but let their crew do the work.
How pathetic.
Is this what PvP has turned into? A real time strategy game? You sit back and let your NPC's do the work?
I remember in beta, crews that actually fought battles. They got into the thick of it, and fought hand to hand. So what's exactly happened from then until now?

What's happened is that the game is live and you can't look forward to a patch update to wipe the server. So now you accomplishments and your ships have more value. So of course people will use whatever tactics are necessary to keep what they have earned.

This tactic can be countered... dont order "attack target" on the captain, go for the crew instead. Use your command skills to keep your crew off the captain. His attempts at kitting fail, you win.

The idea with kiting is to stall so their friends can blow your ship to little bits. So killing off the crew doesn't help as long as the captain is alive.
I think people should simply avoid boarding or being boarded as long as there is more than 1 enemy ship floating out there. Places Pirates in a slight disadvantage though, since we specialize in boarding.

Lesson learned. Don't board in group fights, AvCOM is borked for this currently.
Just sink them, easier and less prone to expoits.

I had this situation against a Pirate today. He jumped me in my little level 14 cutter, and a level 12 jumped in to help me, of course the level 12 got boarded and defeated quickly, but I managed to board the pirate twice.
The first time he had one more wave then me, and managed to defeat me. I didnt have a problem I just jumped back on him after the combat ended.
The Second Time, it was 1 wave vs 1 wave, and I figured I actually had a chance. Of course, he sicked his NPC's on me and ran around shooting me, So I died pretty fast.
But it's a valid tactic. He put points into the Pistol Line, and Im assuming the Powder Jockey Line, and he got the better of me since I didnt have either. All in all it was a good fight though and we both fought well.

If he can do it, can't you do it to him as well? I honestly don't know, just curious.

Try this, order your crew to form a line (whatever that command is), that makes them act as a wall, or just sick them on the crew. Let the captain run around; YOU are over their killing his crew. What does that do? It reduces his waves. Pretty soon he's down to himself and no crew and dies VERY fast no matter how much he runs. Battle won't last all that long, so perhaps you get out in time to NOT sink.
Or, don't board the first ship you come to; sink a few first.

Just to straighten something out, those who advised him not to board them next time.....he didnt, they boarded him. I just happen to know the OP and the situation he was refering to. The French guys he mentioned do nothing but board and use this tactic. Not that im blaming them, it works for them.

Oh. Well. D'uh. Thou hast struck me deep Sirrah! I fear in the morning thou shalt find of me a grave man indeed! Or, to put it another way...10 points Theo <LOL>.
Bleh, enough forum jousting, I'm off to sink ships.

Am I the only one who finds the subject of this thread hilarious?
I mean, really 'pvp is ruined' ? Because some guy doesn't know how to counter a jogging pistoleer?

Until they Put in the Ability to stick your foot out and Trip tha Bumm. I Dont think this will go away :P
Prohaps there should be a Debuff if you tell your men to Charge and then just run around in the back.

Well... hmm.. I would have to say...
Use the distraction ability.. the one you toss a fire cracker in the air... that will stop him long enough for you to get a bleed style off on him or shoot him form afar with your gun.
Either way.. sicking your crew on someone reminds me of Bonedancers in DAoC... 1 word... ***.

I'll be putting points into pistols once the cap is removed :)
Right now I love the Swordsmanship , toughness and the line that allows you to stab their foot and greatly lower their balance. So sword to sword I'm pretty good, but now it's time to set myself up for range as well.

Oh hell I cant believe I didnt remember Hamstring. I looked at the skill and thought of how much of a stupid skill that was, because it wouldnt be useful in a swordfight, unless they were running around... It all makes sense now! bahahaha, I now know how to counter it, your all screwed pistol jockies!

Its called TACTICS. And for each tactic there is a counter-tactic.
Unless you get ganked 1 to 6 of course, but if you do, it is your fault for being there in the first place.

Hiding in the corner then running around in boarding combat while your friends sink them is a 100% valid tactic that is proven to work.
I do question if it's fun though.
A 'I win' tactic than isn't fun to play sounds like something the Dev's need to change. It's meant not be boarding combat not hide in the corner and read a book while you win combat.

devs should introduce the "hamstring" ability from WoW. Use it to slow people down so they can't run away, or maybe it could just disable sprint for 1 minute.

The problem I have with this tactic is that it's currently too easy to board an enemy, it would be much better if boarding could only take place once sails are reduced to %20 - %30. Not only would this be more realistic but means that pvp wouldn't be reduced to the no skill nonsense that is going on atm, even the boarding tutorial suggests that sails have to be reduced before boarding.

No, it would add about fourty seconds onto the time it takes a big ship to board a small one. And make it impossible for a small ship to board a large one.
This would also remove the danger of parking your ship in the middle of a battle to blast someone. This would make it so they would not only have to kill your crew but your sails just to even have a chance to board you.
If you don't want to get boarded you have alot of options:
1) use those item slot to increase grappling defence
2) keep up your speed
3) keep your crew high
4) keep the enemies crew low
5) have a buddy to make the prospect of boarding you much less enticing.

May I point out there is also a hamstring ability with dirty fighting.

I have had SOOOO many opportunities to do just that. But for some reason, my personal honor won't let me. But I will get myself up point black on the stern of the target ship that's being boarded....and ready an Alpha shot just in case my group mate's boarding happens to fail. Usually with crew shot to give my parter a better chance of winning the next fight. hehe
Sometime's I'll demast a ship, so they can't get away while the boarding is going on....Mostly for something to do when there's no other targets....also in case the boarding action fails.
It's called Hamstring.
Hamstring doesn't work when they are sprinting and you have to get into mele with him to land it and it still has to hit.
The "run around like a little wench" while sicking there crew on you exploiting the poor pathing of the npc's in the steaming pile that is boarding combat is having a resurection as a popular tactic.
The best counter I know of for it is to just off his crew. If you set your crew on push and tap follow me regularly to keep them from playing chase the idiot they will help you tear his crew down. Every time he runs past and sicks his crew on you kick "gambit" to get em to go back to fighting whatever and spam your skills that lower there offense as well.
Once he is out of reserves just take your own pistol and get your duck hunt on... Every time he runs past.. Shoot him. :P Oh, it also helps to do /jig while your crew runs around Benny Hill-esque offing the little twit.
Your crew can kill far more crap far better than you can, don't let them get taunted into following a rabbit, keep em close, get the job done, steal his stuff.

Although for Health and Safety reasons running on a 18th Century ship should be removed (other than the sprint option, which has cool off) and replaced with a steady swagger for balance sake (try it and more than likely you'd go proverbial stars over elbow and smash you head open). Its hard enough walking on a swaying ship let alone sprinting.
Such tactics are pretty lame, and not really in the spirit of Swashbuckling, but then it does mean your going to go through his crew faster than Annabell Chong....
Maybe killing all the crew should allow you to also win in boarding (possibly with added plank walking joy).

There is a simple solution to all of this.
Split the damage between both ships. If you are shooting at a ship that is literally tied to another one, I'm sure some of those shots will hit both ships.
This doesn't mean they would still do it, but it will make them consider whether or not hurting their ally will harm the battle later on.
In the end, don't travel alone. This is a game of society and working together. If you need to move goods, bring an escort.
