Ok, so I'm having trouble getting into battles that are open to join.

At first I would just sail into the open battle icon and click on it like crazy , and Occasionally it would let me in.

Then I remember sailing past one and not actually sailing over it, but I hit the spacebar by a fluke and got in.

But last night I sailed on top of one, clicked it like mad, and hit the space bar over and over for about 15 seconds before it turned red, and it wouldnt let me in.

So what exactly is the proper way to join one? Or does the game just not like me?

If you just came out of dock or another combat or something you can't join until the "preparing ship" debuff goes away.

Otherwise you should be able to either doubleclick on the green ring or click and then fire without issue.

You know what, I bet that was it lol, I totally forgot about that. I jumped out of port because two of the other group members left without us, and I immediately saw the green circle and tried to get in, I was then jumped by a pirate who was in the same group as the pirates attacking the rest of my group lol.

As far as I can tell, there are a few bugs here. I have been in situations where a group/party member has sent up a flare and I still could not join the battle. All I can suggest is file a bug report and hope for the best.

flares are for pve only, they do not work in pvp battles.

Do you have Flaremastery? Which level flares do you have equipped?

As soon as I find the book I will be selling Expert Flaremasters in Tortuga AH, you may want to keep an eye on it.
