View Full Version : The only reason to turn on the PvP flag is if you want to get ambushed

Besides the minor OS speed boost that I heard about, there is not a single reason for one to turn on the PvP flag, excluding the crazys who WANT to get ambushed.
Why is this you ask? Well because if you do not have the PvP flag on (from what I've heard) you can still attack people who have THEIR flag on. Why would anyone turn on the PvP flag unless they enjoy getting ambushed? You can normally still attack the same people that you could if you had the PvP flag on.
So the PvP flag is not really a PvP flag, since it doesn't help you PvP AT ALL, its actually an I want to get Ambushed flag.

Why are you making a post solely on what you have heard? This has to be one of the most pointless threads I have ever seen. You have never toggled your PvP flag on, yet you speak as if you are experienced.
Just so you know I have gotten many fair fights with my PvP flag turned on that I would have never gotten without it. The PvP flag is very useful if you want fights. If you dont want to fight, dont turn it on. Yes you can get ganked, but its the risk you take. Quit crying.
...its actually an I want to get Ambushed flag.
Or an invitation to those that enjoy PvP. In any event, the PvE'rs have their cake and are able to eat it too by being enabled to PvP when they want, for the most part and on their terms, without the risk of being flagged and jumped unsuspectedly.
??Ohh, but wait. . .isn't this considered an exploit by some also whereby one team member in a group can be flagged PvP but the other members don't have to be?? *slap* Stay on topic, for the last time. :P

Is some of my information incorrect? If I have gotton some of the technical details wrong then please tell me and I will change my post.

I actually like to pvp very much (although I have not gotton to yet since I haven't played very long). It is the main reason that I came to this game. But do you know how I plan to PvP? On MY terms. If I see a newb (or someone who I want to fight/think I can take on) with his pvp flag on I will gladly gank him. Why in gods name, though, would I turn the PvP flag on when it doesn't give me ANY significant advantage at ALL. All it does is allow others to gank me (and one WOULD get ganked, since why would someone attack you if they think they will lose?).
All I am saying is that there is no compeling reason for ANYONE, even the pvpers, to turn on that flag, when all it does is allow one to get ambushed and ganked. Shouldn't that pvper be the one doing the ganking?

Why would you want to be ambushed though? Don't YOU want to be the one to be starting the fights? The only reason for someone to attack you would be if they thought they are going to win. So unless you are extrordenarily confident in your ability to take on everyone who thinks that they can take you on, wouldn't the PvP flag just guerenty that you would be ganked? (don't YOU want to be the one doing the ganking?)

I PvP but I don't plan my day around "What easy fight that I am in risk of losing can I have today?"
I don't go beat up little kids either. I could, but I don't need to do to make myself feel better.
Well, okay maybe this one kid on my street, rides his bike on my driveway and puts locks his brakes, making those black marks everywhere.
But other than that I think beating up on little kids is dumb.

Wrong. You turn on the flag because you want fights. Simple as that.
Real PvPers want real fights, not easy wins. You do not improve by ganking people or killing noobs. If you think the PvP flag is pointless then dont flag.

Yes, I've stated that I don't plan on doing so, because all it is is a "LvL 50s, please gank me" flag. There needs to be more of an incentive to turn that flag on, because right now the only things the flag does is allow OTHERS to attack you, not allow you to attack others. You can do that ALREADY. Are you saying that you gain more out of the fight when you are being ganked and are badly outclassed, that if you could pick and choose you fights, say fight someone more even who is your same level.

stale2002 as you mentioned there are some sadistic wacos that enjoy the thrill of a good fight or chase and have a large pile of doubloons.
Most PvP is done in groups where 1 member turnes on the flag and the the rest are off and follow close enough to get sucked into the battle once the bait is taken. This way only one of the players can get attacked. If people stray too far away from the bait ship they cannot be ganked by another team.
You just have to play the flag wisely to get any fun out of it. Solo PvP is not wise unless your a sadistic waco that enjoy the thrill of a good fight or chase and have a large pile of doubloons.

Since you're never being forced to use your PvP flag I'm just wondering why this matters to you. But...one great advantage of a PvP flag is that when you're going to a PvP zone where you can get attacked by and also attack anybody anyway it prevents you from being attacked by NPC's while also increasing your OS speed. So there is the advantage of having the flag on...take it or leave it.
Also just as a side note you tend to be able to bait lots of fools to attack you when you're flagged, and usually those fools are easy to defeat.

i can think of many reasons to flip the pvp flag on that don't involve getting ganked.. most involve someone else walking into a gank trap though.
i pretty much leave mine on 24/7. it adds a sense of urgency that i feel the game is missing otherwise.

If your in the red circle without your pvp flag on then you are at a big disadvantage.

Why does it matter to me? Well because I want to see more people with that flag turned and actually have a good reason to turn it on myself. open sea pvp is a great idea and I don't want to see pvp only ever happen in the red circle. Which is what will happen if there is little reason to turn on the flag.
