FLS and the 2D Steering Committee (2DSC) are thrilled to announce our second Flag of the Month Contest !

Every month, we'll invite everyone* to submit flags that fit a theme chosen by FLS befitting the season. FLS and the 2DSC will then pick the winner, which will then be made available to all players of PotBS for a limited time.

*Excluding FLS staff and the 2DSC, of course!

Here's how it works:

1) Find this sticky -- you're already on your way to winning!

2) Design your flag, following the month's theme (see below), our User Content Guidelines (http://www.burningsea.com/page/community/uc/design), and of course our Community Rules (http://www.burningsea.com/page/community/rules).

3) Submit (http://www.burningsea.com/page/community/uc/submit) your design right into the User Content system -- either "In Review" or "In Voting," it's up to you! Submit your designs by Wednesday, November 26, 2008 -- we'll close the stickies that day and begin the judging process! (Note, you may need to rate others' content (http://www.burningsea.com/page/community/uc/voting) first to get credits used to post new designs.)

4) Post your design in this thread using the [ uc ] #### [ /uc ] tag, e.g. [ uc ] 41171 [ / uc ] ( minus spaces):

41171

5) The winner will be selected by FLS and the 2DSC, and announced on Monday, December 1, 2008. The winning flag will then be made available to everyone in the Ship Customization Vendor, located in your faction's Capital.

6) As a reminder, all submissions to User Content -- including the Flag of the Month and Sail of the Month contests -- become property of Flying Lab Software.

This Month's Theme: Celebrate the Holidays!

'Tis the season – in more ways than one! Hannukah, Christmas, Winter Solstice, and a host of other special holidays are just around the corner, and we invite you to celebrate any you choose! The door is wide open on this holiday season. Just keep a few special considerations in mind to help ensure your design fits our early-18th-century setting:

* A lot of our most familiar holiday sights and sounds – strings of lights, Santa Claus, fancily-wrapped Hannukah presents – weren't around yet. Think candles, St. Nicholas (and other traditional holiday figures), and real Hannukah gelt instead!

* People have observed holidays special to them in different ways across the globe. Sephardic Hannukah celebrations had a flavor distinct from those in northern Europe, for example, and different historical (and legendary) figures were given more prominence in different Christian traditions. Take the opportunity to explore the heritage you'd like to celebrate!

* We'll only pick one winner for December, and we're bound to see many great submissions representing several different holidays. We'll judge the designs strictly on artistic merit, and how well they celebrate the holiday they represent – no playing favorites, since our judging panel is just as culturally diverse as our community!

* Lastly, note that designers with content already featured during the month of December are ineligible for submitting content for the Flag and Sail of the Month contests. This includes our first- and second-place winners for Day of the Dead.

So have fun, and help everyone celebrate the holidays!

Some great designs -- keep them coming!

Meanwhile, remember two things:

1) In order to be eligible for the contest, flags need to be submitted to the User Content system (http://www.burningsea.com/page/community/uc/submit). So go vote if you need to, then submit your work!

2) The winning design will be available game-wide from December through February, 2009. While we'll still consider Halloween designs, we're really looking for holidays celebrated in December :misha:

Happy drawing everyone! Just a few days left!

Since I've gotten a few questions about how to use the UC tag, I thought I should post here. Here's how you can use this tag:

1) Go to 'My Content' and click on a flag or sail you've submitted.

2) Note the address in your browser's address bar. It will look something like: http://www.burningsea.com/page/community/uc/viewItem&itemId=50929

3) Note the number at the end of this address: that is the User Content ID number (UC ID#).

4) In a forum post, type the UC ID# inside the UC tag to display it in your post, e.g.: [ uc]50929[ /uc] (IMPORTANT: leave out the spaces!) You'll then see something like this:
50929

It's that easy! Now make those flags, submit them, and show them off here! :misha:

Thanks for the great submissions, everyone! With the 2DSC's help, we'll decide a winner in just a couple days :misha: And in the meantime -- happy holidays to everyone!

UPDATE: We haven't forgotten about this! I'm working with other staff behind the scenes on something that, regrettably, will cause a slight delay in announcing our Flag and Sail of the Month Contest winners. But never fear, by this time tomorrow, winners will be announced! We hope you'll find the wait worthwhile :misha:
