View Full Version : Is this a proper triangular sail design?

I'm anxiously awaiting approval on my sail design, as are many of you. I was thinking about one of my ships and it's triangular configuration with my original design. So I went ahead and worked out a version to see if this is the proper placement for a design that is meant for a triangular sail.
As a side note, is submitting a design specifically tailored for a triangular sail required or is that something they do with the processing on the sails?
(I saw what it did with the beta sails and got to worrying about my own design)
Anyway... here it is.
Is this right?

Works for me (without the background sail texture obviously)!

Of course no background, that's just there to show what it would look like on the sail (looks goofy on a white background I think).
The real question I have is, when that is in game, would it show that logo in the proper spot so it would land in the center of a triangular sail design?

Fore-and-aft sails come in a variety of configurations which may not be mapped identically, so there's no guarantee that what works on one sail will work on others.
That said, I'll try working on a test decal over the weekend and consult with Joram, our main ship processor. Any resolution to fore-and-aft sail mapping won't make it into the game for a couple more releases though, as they require actual work on the ship models themselves.

That should work on a lot of sloops. It's the lower right quadrant that shows on them. Now will that work on all triangular rigs? Who knows! ;) But yes, on Bermys, Xebecs, etc that should look great.

Beautiful. Please let me know what you discover. Once I find out exactly what I should be doing to produce the best results on the Xebec/Sloop series of ships, I'll submit a version of my society flags using whatever info you have for me.
As a side note, I'd just like to extend a thank you. Simply because as an artist and lifelong gamer, it's nice to see a multiplayer game where I can show off some of my art to other players in the game. I think it's awesome and was one of the things that helped draw me into the game... so... thanks. :)

Any word about this yet? I'm hoping that my society sail (http://www.burningsea.com/pages/page.php?pageKey=uc/viewItem&item_id=19404) gets approved soon and I would like to get the triangular sail variation approved as well since I personally sail a triangular sail design, but I'd rather wait to submit it since I don't want to have to withdraw it if it isn't right.
Actually, having this info added to some of the already existing guides might help other folks pre-prep up a triangular sail version as a companion to their square rigged designs.
I'm so excited to see my mates and I sailing along with the Artful Dodgers logo emblazoned on our ships. :)

Still looking for some info about this. If anyone has any proof positive info on this subject, it would be greatly appreciated.

Is the 'shrunk' mapping for triangular sails mentioned in the 2d guide not working?

Now that I've had a chance to test the square rig version (which was just approved), no... it's not really working. The sail isn't meant to be displayed as a pattern and it looks bad on the triangular design as such.
I have the Triangular version in the approval process and I'm hoping that it gets approved soon since the square rig design was. The triangular layout should look perfect on my Arcadia Xebec and other triangular sail ships. :)
Kinda sad though. My society mates are sailing with nice looking society logos on their square rigs while I am not since the square rig design looks bad on my triangular. :(

I know what you mean!
I made some designs with tri-sails in mind as well. http://www.burningsea.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9011
None have been accepted or rejected yet... But I did use the 'Sharktooth Raiders" ingame sail as a guide. They sail a lot of tri-sail ships and they look fine.

Yeah... I think I will probably write up a little tutorial explaining it so people know what they need to do for it once I'm able to actually test the Triangular Sail design in game.
