Hey everyone, let me first say im really looking forward to the release of this game.
PvP has been something i enjoy most in MMO's and the unique and fun system in this game was a big attraction.
What i'd like to know is, essentially, what is a strong career/fighting combo to be able to PvP well?
I'm by no means asking for a "imbalanced" combo that will crush everything without effort but, if i'm to take my PvP seriously and "do well", my experience in MMOs has told me that there are better paths to take than others. To cite WoW (yuk, i know!), anyone whos played recently will know that to do well in PvP there you need to have a good class and talent - warlock being the most prevalent example of course. Is there an equivalent in Potbs?
FYI, i can picture myself in mainly solo to small scale parties but its hard to say because i dont know about having a society in game yet.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT - by the way, i know this sort of request smells a bit of "pew i want to winz0r kid" - i assure you its nothing like that!

Navy or Privateer I'd say.

If you are not going pirate then go privateer. With privateer you can spend a skill point and get sanctioned piracy. That allows you to attack any enemy in the red circle otherwise you can only attack pirates until the port is in full contention.

this game is thankfully nothing like WoW, you can be just about any profession and contribute meaningfully to PVP.
There are obviously some skills and carriers that will be a bit better but the skills are pretty self explanatory and straight forward.
for solo or small group (less than 3 or 4) I would recommend being a pirate or privateer just because they are faster.
Best of luck.

Good to hear. And for the good of everyone i think we should leave WoW out of the discussion - i'm sorry i ever brought it up! :)
Thanks for the advice so far all, keep it coming!

This game is more dependant on the ship you sail than what class you picked at charater creation.

Unlike most games, it's not totally dependent on what class you are. Each are viable in their own way. It just takes time to learn what skills are complimentary and which aren't in PvP (or even in PvE)
Career-wise...if you are going to participate in large group combat, go Naval Officer.
If you are more into solo or small group, pirate, or Privateer.
For Swashbuckling...it's a bit more challenging to explain that, as I am not skilled in that part as of yet. Florentine or Fencing are probably the easiest to get into (Defense and DPS, respectively) Dirty Fighting is useful...but only when you need crowd control...I guess you could say they are the Mezzer class. hehe
I personally don't like DF...I'm working on learning Fencing and Florentine. My NO has Fencing, and once I can get a respec, I think I am going to take my Pirate to Florentine...
This is actually going to be the first game that I may venture into the PvP realm actively...but not for a while yet. I have more important things to do, like level, and get me some skills going...and the cash flow...That's helpful too. hehe

you get a swashbuckling respec from the first mission your class trainer has available at the beginning port.

1 Privateer in fast frig + 5 Navy Officers in the SOL with most guns they can afford is where you want to be in PotBS from what I've seen so far (same for Pirates, just replace classes).

Navy, Privateer, or Pirate. Freetrader sometimes, but the first three are preferable. Navy is more of a line fighter, privateer and pirate are more manueverableish. All work, and remember, player skill is the most important thing.

Seems like the role of the navy officers is to pour out as much damage as possible in a group like this. What's the role of the Privateer? Which skills does he use?

Privy does some damage, and is very fast and manuverable.
Naval is a fine choice too, just make sure you upgrade your guns for extra range so that way you don't get "kited" by a faster ship with long range guns.

What's the role of the Privateer? Which skills does he use?Role of the privateer on the open seas is to commit enemy to the fight. He does that either by playing bait (though an FT in a juicy transport might be better) or by attacking first (see skill Sanctioned Piracy).
In the combat instance, he does the same, but with different tools. Here, he catches the enemy ship (plenty of speed and turning skills). Then he has two choices. First he can decrease enemy ship's speed with Cut Shroud (better than NO variant) and debuff her (Cripple Enemy, Demoralize, Terrorize) so others can sink her quicker. The other is to board ship (plenty of skills to help with that) with the goal to either capture her or put her out of combat by prolonged boarding fight while others pound it to dust. Note that boarding is much harder and riskier than in 1vs1 situation.
NO can also do the same, but with more emphasis on survivability and damage to sails and less on speed and boarding.
I'm sure we'll find some other devious tactics with time, but this is the most obvious one.
