View Full Version : Why are Britain in the lead?

Britain and France both start with 15 ports after Ceyenne was gifted to the british.
Spain and Pirates both have 14.
All nations have 20 starting points except France.. this was initially to offset the fact that the french nation had 2 more ports, but now they don't.
Spain and Pirate should have 10 starting points, Britain and France should have none, so everyone has 150 points.

Honestly I think ALL British sails should have text burned into them saying:

"Yes, I chose the British bandwagon because I am a sheep, Bah Bah"

Huh, you're right. Weird. I'll change the balancing values this week. Everyone should start with the same number of points.

I chose the British because I agree with Congress that we should be calling them "Freedom Fries".

Woo hoo! Not that it matters anyways, I'm sure we'll get a new patch before official launch so as long as everything's gravy by the time the 22nd rolls around I'm happy!

I always played a "british privateer" back in the days of Pirates!. That's where my allegiance lies and it will always be this way.

For Queen and Fatherland!

In 14 years of pirate games, I've almost always been either British or Dutch. Occasionally French. Never Spanish (except occasionally in SMP!, where nation doesn't really matter, and you can start with a rather rare ship if you do it right)

Anyways, always go for the Spanish.

Besides, out of ALL the societies I heard recruiting over a period of 5 months, the best one for me was British.

This thread delivers.

There do seem to be a LOT of Brits about.

This thread was saved by the Monty Python reference, good call!

Pirates will be the true sheep. Though the Brits will have formidable numbers, the servers will be crawling with rats once the flood gates open.

We’re going to be up to our arm pits in Sparrows and every variation of the spelling you can possibly think of.

*sigh* I went British because I genuinely prefer the history of the nation over the others, particulary in the time period the game covers. But, I specifically picked a server that looked like it wouldn't be British dominated (based on where the Beta societies said they were going) because I didn't want to be on the team with the distinct advantage.

Unfortunately, it looks like Brits still have the stronger numbers anyway. *sigh again*

Don't sweat it. I'm still server hopping. I figure bythe end of next week I'll actually figured out where and what flag I'm playing under. I'm sort of eye balling Spain right now. I figure they may have a slightly weaker economy due to lower numbers, but the community may be a bit tighter.

If your really wanting to sail English with a lower than normal English pop, try Rakham. I think we have the most Spaniards of any server, and a fair share of Pirates. Have yet to see England in 'moderate'.

Course, once the 22nd rolls around, though, all bets are off.

If you really want a fun time go play French on Bonny. I think french are the least populated of any nation and bonny isn't exactly very popular.

Yea, Garbad has a following over there, for good reason. I have a pirate there now, but I'm thinking of switching up since I was Spanish in beta. Unfortunatly, I'll be on travel on the whole wek of the 22nd, so even with the head start, I'm still going to find myself a week behind unless I stay on my current character. Ah well, no worries, its only a game.

Yea no worries. Just level at your own pace.

Personally I think it would be funny if in every game the VERY first person to hit level cap would get a message that is sent to them (and possibly the entire server...) that says...

Congratulations! <Name> has reached level <level cap> first! He(You) can put down the bottles of Vault and Red Bull, take the tape off your eyelids, and take a shower now!

This was pointed out early in pre boarding (1/8) and still no action. Since time matters how much of a win will be handed to the most populous nation before you get around to correcting it?

Absolutely inexcusable FLS.

And this is why i'm now an FLS fanboy.. thanks very much Isildur. I say this because he has said 2 things. 1) he's aware of it thanks to a poster on the same day 2) he's doing something about it.

Look at the date he said it (01-08-2008, 09:44 PM)- back on the second day of the pre order - I like FLS as much as anyone but he said it would be fixed that week and now two + weeks later it is not fixed and victory points are going to Britain because of it.

We want our 10 points back :p

SWBgHz

I will second that bump - particularly as a pirate it is hard to get wins later so we don't want to be gimped early on.

Olblach
01-25-2008, 06:19 PM
Yeah true Pirates should get a bonus too. English have the hardest strategic position so they should keep these 20 points, but pirates are disadvantaged as well.

TBH I don't think it will really matter, since I expect the end game difference to be a lot more than 20 points, the balancing should be done in terms of ports/resources if necessary.

Look at the map, Spanish take Yucatan and what can do the English colonists now? It surely needs rebalancing but it's not 20 points that will change much. About Pirates, I've been told they already go to sieges in defiants so they don't need extra points imho.

I hope so too.

It's not really a big deal right now but I'm guessing the longer time passes the more british players will be upset when they thought they where leading and they get points removed from them.

SWBgHz
01-28-2008, 11:11 AM
I dunno - it seems a pretty big deal to me that for no reason other than some sloppy code a competition starts out unfairly.

Captain_Korr
01-28-2008, 11:15 AM
I think part of it has to do with the fact that Britan and Spain start out with 1 more port than do France and the Pirates.

Read the first post- it explains why the points are there, what they were supposed to balance, and why they are now imbalanced.

Despite the fact that I am certain it is not 'hard' it should have been done regardless. RvR is supposed to be important but by letting this go as long as they have FLS has basically broadcast their own system as bogus. FLS needs to get on the ball big time, since open beta their 'performance' with development (managing and taking the game forward) has been absolutely terrible.
