**Note: That subject is supposed to say 'Contention in Pre-Boarding'. However I have the IQ of an overripe fruit.***
Am I confused, or was notice given that there would be no contention on 01/06/08? The day before pre-boarding release?
In an attempt to stave off argument, I just want to be clear that I understand the decision just find the percieved lack of notification distasteful. Unlike most, I did not buy the pre-boarding in an attempt to do mad economy. I had no way of knowing I would not be able to play the full game until the day before release, after I had already paid for it. This has made me a grumpy pirate.
Is there even the slightest possibility of a temp contention zone? Perhaps in the weird dutch town whos name escapes me? The one in the NE, all by itself.
I would also love to hear your reasoning behind keeping the plan for contention in pre-boarding from the people paying for pre-boarding. If I am mistaken here and the information was available, I truly do apologize and will be happy to edit my post into a funny joke about Danicia.

It was first mentioned in the patch notes for version 1.0.35.0
Here is the reasoning per the patch notes:
"Port Contention is disabled until we have the retail launch on January 22, so players don’t show up that day to discover they’ve already lost their first war. You can still PVP by talking to the Port Captain in any port and accepting the PvP Flag mission."

Right, and the patch notes for 35 were published on 01/06/08 ? That's what the little date thing on the patch notes says for me atleast.

Correct that is the first I heard about it. Was a bit of a suprised to be honest and completely changed the way I have been playing pre boarding. Hence the freetrader :-)

It is a bit shady to mention it last minute like that. They should turn on contention but turn off the port battle phase or something.
I'll be fine because I have PvE stuff to get done but I feel for my PvP-only brethren.

I feel for me too ;\
I'm much to dumb to do economy. Until they put in an ingame calculator and a tutor I'm sticking to carebear pvp. I honestly would not have bought the pre-order had I known, would have saved the $49 bucks to help with christmas bills.
You can imagine my frustration finding out the day before that I would be floating around in a world of blue, pvp flagged and bored.
NOTE: Go to the other thread in the 'Ask an FLS Developer' forum. I double posted by accident.

You don't actually pay more for the pre boarding party so what exactly is the problem with that part at least? You just paid earlier than you would have otherwise.
I agree they should have given more warning but i do think its a good idea to get everything rolling and not have the world already in chaos for the new guys that join on the 22nd.

Well, I could have paid a month later and put the money towards christmas bills. It's a personal case, I know, but in mine it would have been helpfull.

Ironically there is some vicious econ pvp going on right now. =) If you want a tutor just ask.

It's ok. Just let me use your 10 lots. I'll even sail to pirate-land in an Atlas Bark to pick it all up every couple days. This plan is win-win.

tbh, FLS should turn contention on now, and just reset the map and victory points before launch. rev did post on the old forums that they did this so that new players don't end up joining and the "war was already lost"

Kinda expect at least 9 zones at the 23rd.
But there are some guys rolling about with their flags on. Hats off to you fine sirs.
BTW if you see any captain of The Macabre on Rackham: it is very, very, very likely that his flag is on. Actually it is nigh certain.
To make it clear: I think we're all permanently flagged.
