I enjoy this game very much, despite limited time to play due to the RL time sink of running a small business, but one thing that really irks me is that some of the people who play have less than exemplary behaviour.
What I particularly dislike, when I am giving up my time and money to play - is when people I've never met (nor am I likely to) and who have the same credentials as I do (we all paid for the CD, we all pay the same monthly subs) deign to tell me exactly how I should play it. This has gotten my goat in every MMO i've played... "You're a wizard, you can't use a sword" -- To ye all, I say... actually, I can't tell you on here what I say, because if the rules allow me to do it, and it amuses me to do so (even if it gets me killed), then do it I shall. I go to work to try and be totally efficient about how things are done, in my limited free time, I do things that are generally a waste of time - but fun. So having declined 10, or maybe 20 port battle invites to let the higher levels go (i'm only level 32) even though i'd worked on some contention and been lucky enough to get the invites I decided that tonight, I was going to experience one - being that an invite had just popped up on my screen for Puerto del Principe. Accepting it was completely intentional. What was UNINTENTIONAL, however, and due to my not paying full attention (i'd been doing some economy stuff and moving goods around and had at some point in the prior 17 minutes, used all of my ships) .... so what was unintentional was that I turned up to the port battle in a lexington stripped brig. If you were there, I salute those who took it in good humour. Although it was a bit embarrassing, in one way - it really "stuck it to the man" - I can imagine the zits on our self appointed masters faces exploding with pure rage at the thought that I might turn up - at only level 32... and in such an unsuitable vessel !! Still. I was able to join a group who were holding the rear of our line, who, to their credit, were in good humour about it. I played my part too - doing a quick scout pre-battle (as the fastest ship, its a privateer blockade runner/hauler and so outfitted for speed and stealth) and reporting back the enemy composition. Then I took my place in the line. Although I didn't get to fire a shot during the engagement (swivel guns ftw), I did manage to take several broadsides from the enemy - broadsides that barely scratched me due to the range and size of my ship, but that therefore didn't damage my allies in my section of the line. I also managed to park behind a friendly SoL with no rear armour and protect it while it manoeuvred its exposed side away from the enemy fire, and during town defence my pistol did as much damage to the enemy as anyone else, and I ran with the group ready to aid any fallen comrades. The ship, and myself - survived the battle intact. The battle was a great victory for our nation, and so - to all those that hate, fear me. To all those who offered their congratulations to me for sticking to my principles, I thank you in return! Next time though, I'll remember to pack my frigate...... |

Bottem line, You state you joined intentional, yet you dit not fire a shot (wierd as a lot of Spanish lied dead in the water at one point or another), you forgot to check what ship you had with you, and you even failed to make it to town as first even when you claim to have such a fast ship. If you run your business as you did this PB you will be broke in 3 weeks.

Well, accidents happen, we accept that. I'd just ask you to consider that during the battle Nethral and I were commanding incredibly expensive ships, and seeing a mid-level player in a non-combatant ship show up just sets off a warning "Wuh-oh... chances of seeing my 2.5 million db ship go under increased by 10%."
It's nothing personal, but when you're bringing major warships to a port battle there's a good deal of pressure to bring them out in one piece or feel the glaring disapproval of your society for getting their pride and joy sank! |

Nobody was comanding any expensive ships... the subscription charge is the same per month no matter how you play with it.
If you choose to place a value on your digital posessions, based on the time you spent to aquire them then fine. No problem. But others place other priorities on their time and see playing games as actually... not that important in the grand scheme of things. Some people just take games seriously to the point of being obnoxious about it. I don't encourage what you did exactly, as I think MMO players have some level of obligation to play to the spirit of the game... but I think anyone who treats you badly for it really, really needs to get out more.

I have had reports that he actually joined this fight to avoid being killed by pirates as they jumped him in his stripped brig

To the leet brigade - *I* am legend.
Oh well it happens, maybe not. Wait I'll remember taking my Bermuda sloop on accident to a Port battle instead of my Posti back in the day when I was lvl 21. Good times ![]() |
