Unhappy Why would.....

Why would a lvl 33 chase down and sink a lvl 11 even if his i9n a area of contenetion just trying to do quest?

The short answer? Because killing a PC in a contested area gives more points for unrest/contention than killing an NPC. Why you're there is irrelevant, and even if you're carrying any good cargo is largely irrelevant. If they're in the PvP area trying to push the port to a battle, killing you furthers that goal more than killing an NPC.

There are lots of quests all over the place and nowhere near an uncomfortable amount of PvP zones. Avoid them without a decent escort, or outfit heavily for stealth.

That design sounds like a great way to run off new low Level players. Any design that gives rewards and encourages ganky players that are just starting to play is just stupid.

"There is no crying in the red circle"

If your a low level player avoid those red circles on your map. There a plenty of quests elsewere and the PVP zones will go away eventualy.

You miss my point I bought this game online and hence do not have a manual. There is no tutorial for the contention areas. I doubt that I would be the only one to not undertand the the full meaning for contested areas. This just sounds like a good excuse to gank noobs. The fact that it is designed that way just doesn't seem to make sense. As for the "crying" I was trying to understand the reasoning behind this type of design.

Nuf said I understand now and will go play if the area is uncontested.

I believe a message along the lines of YOU ARE NOW IN A PVP ZONE is displayed when you enter a pvp zone.

It will make sense if you read through this thread again. There is no way for a higher level player to know you have no manual, nor that you are not carrying unrest supplies. And at level 8 on one of my characters I went looking for fights in the red circles, some of us do. Any fight.

Also every nation has active nation chat, where you can ask about pretty much anything, and where there is a lot of talk about red circles, contention and pvp. I think it would be more of a struggle to miss it than to hear about it.

This game design is definatly not an excuse to gank noobs, but those who like ganking noobs don't need an excuse anyhow. I think you have to accept that no matter your level you risk attack. Be prepared or stay away.

You are not forced to enter contested zones.

Once you do you consent to PvP from anyone, even high level players. You could be hauling goods to reduce unrest for all anyone knows. It is not ganking, it is strategic play. By sinking you 1) no unrest supplies get in and 2) more contention points are generated.

There's a well known quote around that has to do with red circles and certain emotional responses.

I have a friend who plays a FT and turned her PvP flag on as soon as she hit 5th. She isn't crazy about being sunk, but she thinks it's silly that if she is running cargo and sails right past a pirate that they cannot attack her.

I encourage this since I am a pirate. She says other FT's have told her she is stupid and deserves to get all of her stuff jacked.

She tells me that they're just lame.

So this friend of yours, you wouldn't perhaps know what particular areas she like to sail around in would you?

In all seriousness though your friend will learn the techniques and skills needed to avoid and escape combat very quickly in a trial by fire. This will give her a lot more freedom and flexibility than her PvP avoiding fellows. I don't think she will regret any of it later on :-)
