APB has been a fantastic journey, but unfortunately that journey has come to a premature end. Today we are sad to announce that despite everyone's best efforts to keep the service running; APB is coming to a close. It's been a pleasure working on APB and with all its players. Together we were building an absolutely amazing game, and for that, we thank you. You guys are awesome!
From all of the Realtime World staff we thank you for your continued support. The servers are still up, so join the party and say goodbye! - Ben 'APBMonkey' Bateman (Community Officer) |

My favorite quote from my time on the APB forums was someone talking about how they paid a years sub (or 6 months? dunno) and someone replied saying 'someone call the enforcers, you just got robbed'.
Knew that game wouldn't last long from beta, but it was sure fun at times.

I played APB. I really wanted to log in one last time and make a billboard that said either:
"LOL @ $10 for an aim-bot to a dead game" or Statue of liberty buried in sand + "You Maniacs! You blew it up! God damn you all to hell!" I really hope there can be some sort of MMO designers convention where they can all sit down and discuss what RTW/APB did wrong. There was no excuse for some of their mistakes. The PC gaming industry really cannot afford to keep making the same costly, stupid, ignorant mistakes over and over and over. I really don't want to have to switch to console gaming but I think PC gaming is going to die if designers and managers can't pull their heads out of their bungholes. For example: There are cheaters in games, especially FPS games. You have to stop them. You especially have to stop them in the first two weeks of the game, where impressions are made. LET THE BANHAMMER SWING. You can't be handing out warnings and wristslaps, or letting hours of primetime go on for days with no supervision. 3rd party cheats, in-game bug abuse and exploiting some bad design decisions were all major factors in the death of APB. Another mistake was aiming for high-end graphics machines. I love high-end graphics and I spend a lot to stay high end but I also recognize that I am not in the majority and if you want to make a popular MMO, you cannot aim it at high end machines. Aim low. Blizzard's real talent is in making low resolution textures look good. It's always been their talent and it's a big factor in why they are now the gods of the PC gaming industry: they know how to aim low and look pretty good doing it. Another mistake was just making an MMOFPS that was not massive. 4v4? C'mon. People aren't going to pay $10/month for a 4v4 FPS! Especially one with no admins to boot the cheaters. APB simply did not bring the "massive" element to the fight, nor did they really do anything at all to justify the price, over what other shooters were offering. I could probably flesh this post out into a full presentation. APB did have some good stuff going for it and it's a shame to see what happened to it. I'd like to see other developers not make the same huge mistakes. And they totally will. You know they will. It's like PC games are all designed by people who live under rocks and have no idea what worked or failed before.

There are 900,000 more results on google for "APB hacks" than "buy APB". Or anything else involving APB, for that matter.

To any future game developers, don't release a game that had hacks during beta without any kind of anti-cheat software.
