I think that while it is set in this era, there isn't the necessity to portray it EXACTLY as it happened. The majority of people enjoy it for what it is; a game for sailing, shooting, fighting, trading etc.

But even if it doesn't portray it with 100% accuracy, it can provide a perfect step into research on the period for people who want to know more about it. I knew that we had colonies in the Caribbean but apart from watching Pirates of the Caribbean (hardly research) I knew nothing really about it. Since playing pirates however, I've immersed myself in research about the period. It's fascinating and I'd never have discovered it if it wasn't for this game.

The problem with history is it is just too big, and can be hard to know where to start. With the game though it can give you something to look at "Oooh this is a nice ship, wonder if what it looks like irl, oh look at the cannons, ooh look where they were made etcetc".

My point is, the game is good as it is. A perfect stepping stone into the vast pool of history
