From reading books of the era of pirates, the pirates were known by the ship's name, which made it a better challange of who sails the name given ship, for example Robert Bartholomew sail the (Princess) a 140/ton ship from London, and if the ship was recognised in open waters they new it was Bartholomew sailing it, This idea would make it more real and a the same time a challange for others. not knowing who was on their site that was approaching them untile they recognices the ship,not who's title shows on the screen of the capt. sailing it.

this is not a new idea and FLS has already explained why shipnames are not shown
apperently the playerbase is not as adult as you think it is and most ships are not called black swan or HMS victory
much more likely they are called **** me *****, or *****ucker
it is inpossible to police all these shipnames so instead they choose to not show it

also practically, i own quite a lot more ships then a 17 century pirate, and i keep them a lot less longer,
so you will probably never recognize my *******laster or bigboomer or **** you rats! and be able to tie it back to me
