Unfortunately, yes. It lacks hardware vertex shaders.

Everything else is fine, but the graphics are - well, let's rephrase it: This laptop would be a really good business notebook.

How about the Lenovo T61p?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T8300 (2.4GHz 800MHz 3MBL2)
Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate
15.4 WSXGA+ TFT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (256MB Open GL)
2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)

I'm willing to settle for middle of the road PotBS performance in exchange for a laptop that does not sound like a jet engine. Is anyone using a laptop with the Quadro FX 570m?

EDIT: If we ignore the fact that my GeForce 6800 GT video card causes my desktop PC to crash now and then when running PotBS, I find the performance of the GeForce 6800 GT to be more than good enough for PotBS. Can anyone comment on the relative power of the GeForce 6800 and the Quadro FX 570M? I have been browsing Nvidia's website but I can't find any "apples to apples" numbers (e.g. memory bandwidth is available for 570M but not 6800) to compare.

In any event, I would hope that the Quadro 570M kicks the teeth of my old laptop's Radeon Mobility X600 (128 MB) in.

It looks like the Quadro meets the PotBS pixel shader requirements...

That FX 570M is very good, laptop wise. Probably, high settings even.

It looks like the Quadro FX 570m is based on the GeForce 8600m GS, with additional tweaks for use in a professional 3D environment. So, yeah, it's lightyears better than your old laptops X600. Maybe that information can help you to get a more precise comparison.

Thanks Scooder, dpi209. I'll probably go with the T61p.

TANGENT: while googling for information on the T61p and FX 570m, I came across a forum posting by some person who was asking about the T61p but was thinking about going with some other computer because the Thinkpads are ugly. This made me think how DELL builds the stupidest looking gaudy gaming boxes (laptops and desktops) -- that is what the (presumably) spotty 13 year old who didn't want an ugly Thinkpad must have been envisioning as his ideal machine.

I have a Thinkpad (work provided). Yeah, it is ugly but I'll be damned if it is not by far the best laptop I have ever used!
