There most certainly is. Blender is an open-source 3D modeling/animation suite. It works on lots of platforms! Check it out here:

If you want something else.. you could try Cinema 4D, which will export to FBX, which Maya can import.

Houdini is also an extremely reputable package, and its mac version is on the way:

Being based mostly on procedurals though it's not exactly the kind of package for this job.

Of the other two large programs, XSI works on Linux as well as PCs; Max is Windows only, unfortunately.

Not only is Blender FREE as in beer, it is also free as in speech. All the source code is available (for those of us who care about that)
