Default New LCD, problem with flickering text

Problem: Obnoxious motion flickering of small text (only) with new LCD in-game.

Specifics: Replaced (for the moment) 17 inch Samsung CRT with 22 inch Acer X223W 1680 x 1050 LCD Display.

The LCD is a "5ms" model, TN panel, running at native resolution.

Refresh rate desktop 60 HZ. Refresh Rate in game 60 Hz.

Edit: Full Screen and Vsync enabled.

Acer monitor drivers from Acer website installed.

Operating System: Windows Vista X64 Service pack 1.

Computer is a custom job with Intel dual core wolfdale 7300 at stock, 4 GB of RAM and Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L motherboard.

Graphics Card: NV EVGA 9800 GT SC. Factory clock. Settings are High Quality, Application Control. Frame rendering currently "3 ahead" (default).

Graphics Driver is from September, NVidia 178.13 (note: the "latest driver" is not always such a dandy idea, see post just below)

Symptoms: the name and associated text above an avatar or NPC flickers badly when my character moves, and when the NPC or other avatar moves.

On the OS, the name and associated text above ships flickers badly when my ship moves and they move. Happens in target lock mode and no target lock as well.

This is the only text that flickers, and it flickers when there is motion.

It turns out this same kind of text flickering would occur on the CRT, but to so little an extent as to be unnoticeable. In fact, I had to go back and look for it on the CRT after first seeing it on the LCD display.

All the other graphics are flicker free in motion or at rest.

Most Graphics settings in game scaled back to "performance" with no discernible effect on flickering.

*** Any reasonable suggestion will be considered. The store I bought the lcd from has a good return policy. Thanks for any help.

If it's doing it on the CRT, then your LCD panel is likely not defective. Are you seeing ANY other graphical anomalies in the game?

Thank you for a reply. No other graphic anomalies of any kind.

Keep in mind that the flickering was so minor on the CRT I didn't even know it was happening until I bought the LCD. I went back and looked for it on the CRT.

I would be interested in knowing if anyone else with large(ish) LCD panels see anything similar to the text flickering I experience.

2 x Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT (SLI), 178.13 drivers
24" BenQ 241W LCD display, 1920 x 1200, 60Hz.

No display problems at all. No flicker. All game settings on max and very nice it is too

I am sorry you are having problems. My knowledge of computer hardware is minimal, so I do not know what information might help you.

Check the refresh rate on your LCD (it's in the graphics advanced settings, under monitor tab). Most of LCD's have a native 60 Hz refresh rate set. Some more expensive and specialized ones, especially for 3-D, will have higher settings. If yours one of them, tweak your refresh rate higher or lower.

If that's not the case, try to increase or decrease your Vsync settings.

Good comments. Monitor Refresh under monitor tab is 60 Hz, as in initial post.

This monitor is not one of the new 120 Hz lcds, in fact it is a fairly old model (a few months).

It's my understanding that Vsync can only be either on or off. I've tried it both ways. No change.

I have a few more things I can try (for instance connect new lcd to old computer with 7900GS and check behavior in game).

The cause may be just about anything, especially with older monitors. I would also check how well the video cable is sitting in both, the computer and the monitor, try wiggling it a bit and screwing it tighter. Check for bent pins. If it has a DVI-to-VGA adapter, try connecting without one or using a different video cable. Basically, try any option you can think of. If nothing works, invest $200 in this economy and get yourself a new one
