Question How Old is Old?

Having sailed since before opening day's release in the Closed Beta, I also really disliked the Bushido combo concept added to Avcom. Between Blue and Eggie extensively documenting as well as the many others whom had outright Mastered swashbuckling, to later change it as part of the forward vision, also meant figuring it out all over again.

The original avcom, which was prior to Brawling skills and as mentioned above, the crew boarding minimum waves "increased", which was to offset those who could entirely reduced the target ship to only its Captain, caused many to question loudly "What Next"?

I respec'd to Brawling School and have found it extremely cumbersome and far less fluid key mashing as any of the Sword equipped builds.

So my question - based upon this topic - Which definition?

Pre-Brawling Skill addition or Pre-Brawling School?

I rather liked the idea of throwing punches and firing pistols as more an augmentation of base Swordplay rather than entirely separated as a fighting discipline ala Martial Arts monk.

The ironic thing is that a lot of the problems with the old avatar combat system were fixed by things added in with brawling. Damage resistance reduction, stun immunity, etc. If they had broken down the brawling school into two lines, and say, replaced the old avcom command trees with them, then you'd have introduced a lot more variety and tactics.

I am pretty sure that when people say they want old avcom, they are referring to the old Balance system. I can't speak for others, but I never had network-related issues with old avcom, and we had far more people on the servers back then.

It would be nice to have the game as it was on the original CD for Nostalgia reasons, I think it was much more fun then and way less complicated, I mean No stacking penalties, No Port Governance, No fleet strength to calculate, no active nation switching, Blind AH, No Buccs, and many more.

And btw, I still have my original discs of the game.

I loved the old system, and as much as the new one has been improved... it's still polishing a turd. Gear balance needs a bit of looking at either way, too.

It wouldn't be impossible to merge the two but I can imagine it would actually take more work and introduce more bugs than simply re-writing avcom from scratch. I could be wrong on that though as it was a bit of a vague post.
The really weird thing is, the last time this was brought up with FLS (around build 2.8) the responses lead me to believe that they really didn't have the old code any more.

I found it surprising, but I've gotten the impression, from discussing this and several other systems (OS for example) that there is quite a bit of code from the original game release that either hasn't been saved or hasn't been well documented.

Well, the current OS system. And Ad-hoc rules of engagement is also stupid.. The code for the original rules doesnt exist because there werent any.. back in beta and pre-boarding the rules of engagement was non-existant..

If you were in red anyone at any size could tag you. even 6 of them. And with it my favorite... headspawning

I also recall seeing some 30v2 OS engagements from the early beta, so... Not sure that is entirely better. But it sounds like the engagement mechanics aren't really working quite as people had hoped.

Hehe, im sure 30v2 is a very early stage of the ruies :P

Just as it is now when they try to remove ganking etca, aint working. Only way to stop from being ganked is by having a fast ship.
