Now I've read that a good way of leveling up is to attack NPCs who are above your level.
The thing is, how big does the level difference have to be? At level 8, I defeated a bermuda sloop (l.8) in a fallback halifax and got 230 XP. At level 9, I defeated a Van Hoorn snow (l.12) in a bermuda sloop and got 230 XP. Is it the same XP because the level difference between the ships is equivalent? (halifax vs. bermuda = bermuda vs. van hoorn ?) |

Like most games you get more Exp for beating tougher opponents than you, but in PotBS the thing that is the measure of Toughness is your Ship not your Character level. If you are sailing a big ship and attack small ships you will get little Exp. If you attack ships about the same size as your ship then you will get the standard Exp. If you use a small ship to take out bigger ships you will get increased Exp. Of course it can take a smaller ship a longer time to take out a bigger ship and there is more risk involved, but using the biggest ship you have for PvE experience gathering isn’t always the best way. There are other factors as well. Higher level NPCs in bigger ships drop higher level gear, so while I could sail my smallest ship and get the same exp fighting smaller npcs I tend to use a middle of the range ship that lets me attack some higher level ships for better drops and still generate decent exp. |

A good way to level up in PotBS, and in most any other MMOG, is to fight mobs your level or lower.

Both are good ways to level up. Even better imho is to group up and take out the really big fish. Generally speaking attacking NPC's will get you more xp's than missions and missions will get you more db's than NPC's.

Good point. Since XP isn't split in a group, grouping is a very efficient way to level.
