I had the great good luck to pass Taelorn on the dock while on my way to Bey's Retreat. I asked him if he had any extra Athenas and he gave me one. So I took her for a spin in the mission and I do like how she handled a lot. She is a large slow ship and keeping her speed up is key. I am not really used to this problem since so far the Stralsund is the largest ship I have in live.

The only thing I think people are going to dislike is the gun layout. She has 16 6lbs on the upper deck, and this is her strength. There are also 8 12lbs on the lower deck, and they do decent damage. Just for ref I have 2x Perfect cannon 2, 2 armor 2, 2 tough sail 2. Reenforce gunports, Extra Powder Mag, and a cannon mod I cant remember.

At the start of the mission I wasnt' sure I was happy with the stats, but by the end of the mission I was very happy. I was able to take down the boss, John somebody, who was in a pretty high level ship ( Myrmadon or MC Myr). He fled when we got the upper hand on him. I was able to sail through the enemy, I didn't expect to survive this, and chase him down. Thankfully the rest of the enemy fleet went after my allies and I was left alone with him. I finally finished him off and wasn't in too bad a shape. Overall, she is a very nice tank, slow, a little undergunned but if handeled well.

Overall I am well pleased, but I don't think a lot of people are going to like her. She is very different from most ships. I am sure some people will though, so time will tell if she is a good ship or not.

Holy schnikes!

I think Dark Knight Company might have to adopt these ships for the figurehead alone...

ressurecting this thread: The lowe gun "deck" on the Athena frigate, is it accurate with only two at the rear and two midships? It sure looks VERY strange!

That's correct. I believe the term for this kind of ship is demi-battery. Quick check with wikipedia confirms this:
