Default DREWC No crying .....

New Devlog: The state of PvP
02.29.08 by DrewC

"Remember, there's no crying in the red circle."

Drew, can you explain what you mean by this. It is the FLS mantra that I've heard many times but I've never heard a developer explain what they mean by it.

In light of all the posts regarding how the red circle design has ended up being a gankfest,
and souring many people's taste for pvp, I was wondering why you used those words.

It appears that you are saying if you entered the red circle, and you got ganked, don't bother complaining about it, that's a game design.

Can you comment on this please.

the reason you get ganked by 6 players is because they themselves are not sure if your in a group. theres an icon for the group leader but not group members. another reason is that you can send up a flare to allow other players to join in. in all if you don't want to be attacked by another player stay out of the red zone.

Flares don't work for PvP. So after the first minute there is no way to call for help.

He used those words because THERE IS NO CRYING IN THE RED CIRCLE. If you got ganked then it is your fault for being in a red circle. Maybe you want the Red Circles to part as YOU enter them. in short if you die in a Red Circle dont cry about it.

actualy the players started this they just adopted it

People started saying this in closed beta

If you get caught in a red circle your not supposed to complain about it as war is hell as they say

There are two aspects to this quote*:

First, Open Sea PvP is a very low restriction PvP system. Characters can be attacked by virtually anyone, and they can most certainly be ganked. That's the nature of the system, and we're not changing that system. So we don't want to hear any crying about it. War's not fair. Open Sea PvP is war. Open Sea PvP is not fair. I recommend trying to figure out how to make it not fair in your favor.

Second, it's a reference to the fact that it's only a game, and not something worth crying about. I know MMORPGs are very immersive games, and many people poor a lot of time and energy into these games. I'm really happy that players are that excited about Pirates, but at the end of the day, it's important to remember that it's still a game. It's not worth losing your temper, or getting upset over. It's just a game.

In short: there's no crying in the red circle.

*It should also be noted that the line is a reference to a quote from the movie "A League of Their Own." While it doesn't really impact the meaning of the quote, it does make it funnier to imagine a scruffy Tom Hanks shouting "There's no crying in the red circle!" At least, it's funny to me.

holytagmuffins. I have to revisit this thread after lunch because it seems like it may just have gained some decent traction.

It was very good to hear they are sticking to the vision of the game. It's a great game and with improvements to the existing gameplay, it can become an amazing game.
