Game refuses to play at high detail in windowed mode.

If I play PotBS in a window it refuses to remain at high detail, or medium detail.. or anything other than minimum really, because after a short while it says "graphics card overloaded, resetting your preferences" and drops the settings.
Thing, it doesn't do this if I play full screen.. the game happily buzzes along at max detail. Performance in a window is great, it just refuses to stay at high res..

this is funny mine in the opposite way, windowed i can play max fine but in full screen it gives me the same message after about 5 minutes.

Best I can figure from looking at metrics and so on is that this is caused by some kind of memory leak related to running in a window on some setups.
I've reported this issue several times..

Whether the memory leak is a major issue or not I'm not sure; what is an issue is the way the game behaves when it happens.
Fullscreen it appears to be working in much the same way - I still get minor loading pauses as things load in and out of graphics memory, just the game doesn't reset my preferences when it happens when I'm running fullscreen.

Unfortunately it seems that FLS still haven't stopped the game from freezing up for about 10 seconds and furling sails whenever the graphics are reset; this makes the problem a game-breaker.

I don't want to be forced to run fullscreen.

This has been a problem (for me and at least one other) ever since the 'reset your preferences' thingy was implemented.
