Default War?

I'm a newb I confess, but which nations are at war RIGHT NOW with which other nations? Now, how did you know?

Or are all at war with all, all of the time, in the 1720 Caribbean?

i dont know if war is the right term, lets say there is competition in a limited space for limited resources between all 4 factions. Ports are contested (you'll see that in release) by the varying factions for control, which lowers tax rates in the port themselves, allowing whoever controls the port to more easily procure/produce supplies and create goods to sell/consume for themselves.

there are no official "wars", as any nation member has access to any other nations ports (just not all services therein).

All nations are always at war with each other.. Thats why you can attack and capture any other nations port.

This doesnt limit which ports you can use though.. just which services.. Little bribes at the docks and well people tend to look the other way even in times of war.

technically contention is turned off so there is zero war

when its on we all fight each other in other words there are 4 sides to this war not two

I think the best way to describe the situation is the way I remember it from a devlog (I think). "No peace beyond the line." Meaning that back in Europe France, Spain, and England are not actually at war with each other... officially. However, once you get out to the colonies (byond the line is a slight reference to the line established by the Treaty of Tordesillas) its much more of an "anything goes" situation. The idea behind port conquest is that all of the local colonial powers are fighting each other for control of the carribean, and when the map is "reset" after a "win" what is actually happening is that the powers in Europe got fed up with the crap going on here and signed treaties to return things to the way they were.

What andy says is pretty much the way it was described by the devs. It may seem like a war to those of us in the line of fire, but back in Europe it's just squabbling.

Historically:

1702-1713 War of the Spanish Succession
1718-1720 War of the Quadruple Alliance
1739-1742 War of Jenkins' Ear

In-game, all factions are are in a state of perpetual conflict.

I've always assumed at we are sometime in the 1702-1714 period. Why do I think that? For one Porty Royal is partly destroyed, pointing to the earthquake of 1692 where 1/2 the city fell into the sea. For another, my boarding party always shouts "God save the Queen," pointing to Queen Anne (reigned in the early 1700s).

If that's true, it does put us well withing the War of the Spanish Succession, a good time period to have the three nations in this game duke it out. Anyway, I always assumed that we constantly fought the other nations to deny the the opposing nations in Europe the fruits of her holdings here in the Caribbean. Plus, being Nautical like in theme, we can fight the other nations to press their crews and claim the ships a-prize, something that was not uncommon in even the most peaceful years.

Although the possibilities for player promoted and agreed treaties between two nations on a server are an exciting facet of the game, and actually happened during closed beta.

Yes, they did, and I enjoyed that aspect. With retail, though, and thousands of newcomers, it's going to be very difficult to enforce any sort of treaties.
