You've known me for years as "Inspector General" at Flying Lab. A title we made up to cover the fact that, for a while, I was more than just QA Manager but also managed the schedule and the Beta. Once Rev became Producer, I let him do the scheduling. And once we went Live (no more Beta), I let my QA Lead handle QA and I focused on Customer Service. I'm headed back into the scheduling and process arena with the title of Producer. Joe, and I can't believe I'm saying this, is headed to a local startup as their CTO. While I'm excited for him, he's been at FLS longer than anyone except Rusty and had quite a huge positive impact. He's leaving some big shoes to fill. (Seriously, he's like a size 17 or something.) But I like a challenge so here I go!
What about Customer Service? Todd Schultz (Nutch) has been my QA Lead since last September and they're in better shape now than they've ever been. He's made huge strides in improving communication between QA and other departments, improving QA process and making them more efficient, and actually helping them more effectively champion bugs for fixing. Not that there aren't still a number of bugs to fix but I've been pleased with his take-charge attitude and proactiveness. (Is that a word?) He'll be QA Manager now, in charge of QA and CS. Since QA and CS have been intermingled for a while now, helping each other confirm and log bugs, owning both teams makes a lot of sense and will just make it easier to continue to improve CS. As always, the biggest challenge in the Producer role is trying to find the proper balance between fixing bugs, improving existing content, and new features. There's also the people side of trying to ensure we're maximizing everyone's strengths, minimizing their weaknesses, and giving them opportunities to grow. While I think we move closer and closer to getting the formula down, I look forward to working with both the Pirates of the Burning Sea team and you, our community members, to get it just right. ![]()

Bah, my shoes are only 15s.
![]() Flying Lab has been home for a long, long time now, and I'm really going to miss it. This new job was just too big an opportunity to pass up, though, so it's time I jumped out of the nest. I'm happy to leave you in such capable hands. I really appreciate all that the Pirates community has taught me during my stint as producer. They should come in handy once my new project is announced (and eventually launched.) Plus I'm keeping my Pirates account (the one without the GM powers so maybe I'll run into some of you in game.Joe |
