Default Newbie says hi

Okay so after watching Pirates of the Carribbean I got an urge to try this game's trial and see if it's good or at least niche good like EVE, I gather it wasn't good at the start with so few servers around now.

I rolled a British Privateer here since it's EU and the Privateer seems to have less pvp restrictions? But would it be a better idea to change it to Spanish or French for the xp bonus and to not end up zerging down the other sides every other fight like Warhammer Online if I decide to buy the full game?

Does the levelling take long(not counting xp bonus) or is it a reasonable amount of time like WoW, or does it feel grindy like WAR/AoC did or take ages like City of Heroes? Does pvping take a lot of grinding to have enough ships to fight with? I play EVE online and when I have a bad streak things can feel like I spend over half my time grinding cash rather than blowing peeps up, gets a bit dull.

What's the earliest you can do reasonably okay in pvp this game as well? In EVE I led a bunch of newbie fleets of cruisers n' frigs killing battleship grps and the likes for a while when I was new(k we nearly all died but they lost more money than we did).

Tips on what to do to level fast, ships to get, builds to use very welcome. Also is the Privateer actually good?

Regarding pvp it depends what sort of pvp you want.

A group of low levels (provided they're not too low) can take down a level 50 in a good ship.

In group fights you could tag along with others in your low level provided the group is good enough to compensate. For example a 6v6 where the players are evenly matched but 1 side has a low level in their 6 will be disadvantaged. If you take a 6v6 with one stronger side and a lowbie then it'll cancel out type thing.

1v1 fights it's possible for low levels to defeat high levels however that relies on the skill difference of the 2 fighters. In most cases it's people who have started a new character that will win with low levels rather than a completely new player. A new player most probably will not be able to make the skill difference to win.

My advice would be to find a good society to help you in both leveling and taking you in their groups to pvp. They should also be able to tell you information you need and supply you with ships etc.

Also regarding the privateer it's a good choice for pvp especially if you want to solo.

If you do want to solo then I suggest you start at around level 25. This is mainly because you'll be losing a lot at first and low level ships are a lot cheaper and easier to replace. What tends to happen is a new player will get powerleveled straight to 50, get a moderate cost ship, sink it and then have to spend ages trying to replace it.

Same with what Mat said.

Find yourself a good society. If you are on a trial i suppose you cant use Nation chat, but write your name up here and im sure any Socs that read this will send you a tell to find out more about you. If you dont want to post your name, just send it to me in a PM, and i will try to find a Soc that matches what you want.

I'm pretty sure most of your problems will be solved as soon as you get into a Soc.

I recently found myself helping a new guy to the game find his way through the mechanics. I saw myself thinking, "Jeez I remember when I was a newbie."

The best advice I can suggest is get to level 50, do not try an fight as a lowbie yet...
1. Do all the novice quests, because the little clickies help.
2. Play around in a non MOV ship to find your feet.
3. Join a Society that is experienced. As a Brit I can only suggest ISY, as the rest do not attempt to fight, and these are the only ones that I see giving it.
4. To advance your level fastish, do the San Macros, Jaqueme missions as soon as you can.
5. As a Brit you might get frustrated as many of them (not Tikky), do not like to pvp (NSTC), but, pvp ultimately wins the game.

HA!

I dont know if you noticed yourself but when was the last time you flew the brit flag?

Most socs have pvp members now, including ourselves, and train our new players as best we can.

Dont comment on such subjects without being in the nation itself.

ladies ladies please...
This is about a new player not ego's,

Best advice I can give is dont rush through the levels too much if your new to the game, enjoy it. You will find fighting ships easy to come by if you make a little money here and there. A solid society with a good econ and active members (cant stress active members enough) will provide ships for you at cost or depending on how you agree to donate money.

Top end ships will take some time to come by (2nd rates and up, even sometimes for a herc mc frigate). Enjoy having fun in cheaper ships for a while because the expensive ones can cause ball ache when you lose them.

The PvP in this game when it goes down is unbeatable. You say you want to be a PT, good start and their ships are pretty cheap next to naval officers top end ships. Like whats been said before PT's are also good for 1v1's. Understand the game first and ask in your nation if you dont understand something and hopefully the nice people will help.

Getting into the society that fits your playing style is key in this game.
