Default Small Ships

I tried looking through the index for higher level ships that are 'small' and can't find any...are there any, or the higher level of ship you go the slower/better gunned you get basically?

I'm a huge fan of the Mastercraft Bermuda Sloops. They have an excellent max speed and great turning, fast & slow. Their capacity is 145 I believe and 90 crew.

The higher level ships get progressively bigger and bigger as you go up in levels. Everyone maxes out at the 52 gun ship of the line, though Naval officers can continue on up to the 104 gun ship of the line.

A mastercrafted Bermuda sloop will still work, though. It just depends on how you play it. Going yardarm to yardarm in a continous exchange of broadsides until somebody surrenders is probably not going to work if you take a MC Bermuda against a 52 gun SoL. A more manuver and disable tactic is probably more likely to work.

There are no higher level small ships... If you want to sail something small and fast you have to stay with lower level small ships.

This doesnt mean they are not useful! Remeber they get a larger buff from fitted items, in addition you can fit higher level items to them. These ships tend to be used as tacklers and can be VERY effective even in larger fights with large warships.

Just remeber a small ship your goal usualy isnt to sink the SOL... its to tie it up while your allies do that.

Yup and as hard as it is to hit ships based on the smaller they are you can do pretty good if you keep some range between you and them even if they are firing at you.
