Connecting to the Pirates of the Burning Sea IRC Channel
This guide will explain how to connect to the official Pirates of the Burning Sea IRC Channel. The following subjects will be covered within this guide; downloading mIRC, setting up your mIRC client, registering your name, and creating a perform.
Downloading and Installing mIRC
To start off, you need to get an mIRC client to use. mIRC is a program that allows you to chat on an IRC network. It's the equivalent of using a messenger program, such as AIM or MSN. To download mIRC, please visit this page. Once you download the file, open it, and just do a normal install. Don't remove any of the check marks from the boxes, just keep clicking continue and next. When you reach the end of the installation, check the box that says "Run mIRC". Voila, your mIRC client is now open.
Setting up mIRC
When you open up your mIRC client, you will be graced with an about page that asks you to register your copy of mIRC. Ignore this, and just click continue. You will not be forced to register or pay for the use of mIRC, so you can just click continue every time you open up mIRC. Now, you will be faced with a screen that looks like this... (click here)
You just need to put in your normal alias in the first three boxes. For the fourth box, you can just put in another random name, or your alias with an underscore (_) after it. This is the name you will reconnect with if your connection drops. Now, you will be on a page that looks just like this... (click here)
In the red area I have highlighted, type in "/server -m irc.coldfront.net -j #burningsea". Once you type this in, press enter. You will now connect to the Coldfront IRC network, and you will automatically join the Pirates of the Burning Sea channel. You will be looking at a screen that looks like this... (click here)
You are now in the chat room. You are free to talk by typing in the red box I have highlighted, and pressing enter. Now, you may want to register your nickname. This is quite simple, just type in "/ns register password email". Replace "password" with your desired password, and "email" with your email. Your email will be used for recovery in case your IRC nickname is ever hijacked. There will be no spam sent to your email inbox.
Setting Up Your Perform
I'm sure you do not want to type in all those commands every time you connect, so I will show you an easy way to get around this. A "perform" will do a set amount of tasks for you when you connect to a network. To start out, press Alt+O, this will bring up a window that looks like this... (click here)
Now, click the "Servers" button, which is highlighted in red. Now, you will see a huge list of random IRC servers. Ignore this, and press the "Add" button to your right. You will now be faced with this screen... (click here)
Now, for the "Description" box, put in "Coldfront", for "IRC Server", put in "irc.coldfront.net", and for "Group", put in "Coldfront". When you are finished, press the "Add" button. You will now see something similar to this picture... (click here)
Now, click the "Options" button I have highlighted in red, and you will now be on another page. click the "Perform..." button, and you will now be looking at this page... (click here)
Make sure you check the box I have highlighted in green. Next, press the "Add" button, which I have highlighted in red. Find the name "Coldfront" on that list. It's in alphabetical order, so it won't be too hard to find. Once you find it, highlight it, then press "Ok". Now, you should be on a page that looks like this... (click here)
Bring down the drop-down menu, and select "Coldfront". Now, in the "Perform Commands" tab, put in "/ns id yourpassword". Every time you connect to Coldfront, you will automatically be identified as the owner of your nickname if you are registered. Next, press enter, and on a new line, put "/join #burningsea". This will automatically place you in the Pirates of the Burning Sea channel every time you connect. If you wish to join the Booty Island Radio channel every time you connect, make a third line, and put in "/join #bootyisland-radio". Now, press "OK".
Congratulations! This long and strenuous process has now permanently set you up on mIRC! From now on, just open up mIRC, and type in "/server irc.coldfront.net" and press enter. Your mIRC client will now do everything else for you.
