Welcome to the last Community Spotlight of 2008! In this regular feature we highlight a community member who has stood out from the crowd. This month we've picked Flyingpom!

Mr Pom has been with us since we launched in Australia, and has been a regular contributor to our forums ever since. He is always incredibly friendly and helpful, both to new players but also to us with his suggestions. He also has epic hair. Seriously, it is the stuff of legend.

Please join me in congratulating Flyingpom. You can read our interview with him below!

How did you come across Pirates originally?

Well I'd noticed the Beta a couple of times but never applied. Then Around December of 2006 I started to see some coverage of PotBS floating around and thought it looked pretty cool. I'm not a big MMORPG guy but the idea of Port Battles really got me excited and when I saw an article saying that Australians could get the client for free I was sold. My friend and I braved the looming specter of Bigpond and managed to get into the game the day it launched in Aus.

What is it that keeps you playing today?

The Friends I've made without a doubt. Playing on Invincible for nearly a year was sometimes a tiring and frustrating situation but looking back on it I'm really happy I did. The people I've met, not just in my own nation are a great bunch of guys and girls. We really came together as a community and created fun for each other when a less giving group of people might just have left.

Speaking of community, another reason why I still love this game and want to be involved in it are the ever present Danicia (Feed her bacon and she'll do anything for you!), Yardy and Daeke. Their good natured helpfulness on the forums has created a community throughout the servers that I enjoy playing with. Finally and I can't stress this enough, I LOVE PvP in this game! Port Battles are cool, as are 6v6s but I'm never happier than when I'm fighting a good 1v1 with an opponent (especially the mysterious Mr. Chumbucket). The ship combat system is definitely my favorite aspect of the game and as long as I can still find opponents to fight I'll be around for a long time yet.

What's your favorite nation/career?

Well nation is a tricky one. I spent the first nine or so months as a Brit and I loved it. But after some of my friends rerolled I moved to France, which I'm also enjoying. For now I'll say Britain and France are tied for me :D As for Career, at the moment it is definitely Privateer. It's the only class I've ever got to level 50 and I loved fighting with it. But I am leveling a Naval officer so the jury's out on which one I'll prefer once I get the NO to level 50.

Which of the upcoming features of Pirates has you most excited?

Well I'm a big 3D guy, having done a fair bit at school so I always love the town revamps. But the feature I'm most looking forward to is Port Governance. I remember one of the FLS devs popping onto the Invincible internet radio show that we used to have and being interviewed about it on there. Since then I've been waiting impatiently for the system to be in place. Residents of Charlestown beware, for I am coming!

What's your favorite part of our community?

↑ Previous |  Top  | Next ↓

That's a tough question; I guess I would just say how passionate they are about the game. One of my favorite pastimes is looking through the player created assets in the game. I don't look nearly enough myself, but I'd encourage everyone to check out the ships that community members are working on from time to time. I guarantee their work will blow you away.

Any advice you'd like to give someone who wants to get more involved?

↑ Previous |  Top

Well there are plenty of ways to get more involved, but probably the easiest way you can is apply for the boarding party. Once in there you'll find lots of people who need help with things. If that's not for you though, then you can always just try and be helpful on the forums. Check out the new player sections or the trouble shooting sections from time to time and help out the poor souls who are having problems.

At the end of the day, it just helps if you try and be constructive in a facet of your involvement in the game. Resist the urge to troll people on the forum or mess with them in game and remember you're dealing with humans, so show them the respect that you'd like to be shown.
