Fallback Ships
While Fallback ships are not typically considered upgrades to your current ship, in some cases they can be just that. Fallback ships are essentially default ships. Fallback ships exist for times when you have no other ship.
The first ship you start with is a Fallback ship, and if you sink that ship enough (five times), you will be given a new Fallback ship that corresponds to your level and career.
For example, Freetraders start with an 'Otter' Skuda. If at level 9 they haven't replaced their 'Otter' Skuda and they sink it five times, Freetraders are given a 'Dolphyn' Ketch. At level 14, the replacement Fallback would be a 'Mediator' Cutter.
| Freetrader | Naval Officer | Privateer | Cutthroat | Buccaneer | |
| Level 1 | 'Otter' Skuda | 'La Belle' Light Corvette | 'Halifax' Schooner | 'Halifax' Schooner | 'Otter' Skuda |
| Level 9 | 'Dolphyn' Ketch | 'Bermuda' Sloop | 'Bermuda' Sloop | 'Bermuda' Sloop | 'Bermuda' Sloop |
| Level 14 | 'Mediator' Cutter | 'Mediator' Cutter | 'Mediator' Cutter | 'Mediator' Cutter | 'Mediator' Cutter |
| Level 17 | 'Curieuse' Snow | 'Curieuse' Snow | 'Corsair' Xebec | 'Corsair' Xebec | 'Corsair' Xebec |
| Level 20 | N/A | N/A | 'Hermes' Packet-Boat | N/A | N/A |
| Level 21 | 'Lexington' Brig | 'Lexington' Brig | N/A | 'Locust' Corvette | 'Lexington' Brig |
The table to the right lists the Fallback ships for each career and level. For instance, a Freetrader level 14 – 16 would get a 'Mediator' Cutter. Keep in mind that all of these ships are the Fallback version, which is not the same quality as the normal version.
Considering a Fallback
This concept sounds great: destroy your ship, and then you are given a better ship. This plan has several downsides:
- Lower quality—Fallback ships (like Civilian Ships) are not the same quality as their normal counterparts.
- Fallbacks have a single durability—besides your starting ship, all Fallback ships have a durability of one (meaning they can only sink once before they are gone).
- No PvP in a Fallback—Fallback ships cannot initiate Player vs. Player (PvP) combat.
- Missions will be difficult—you may find missions too difficult if you wait until level 9 (or 14, etc.) to replace your ship.
- The payoff is small—after battling through missions in an inadequate ship, constantly getting sunk, your reward is a new ship with a single durability and low stats.
