Pirates of the Burning Sea™ includes an in-depth, player-driven economy that players can use to generate income, purchase Ship Outfitting or ammunition, build ships, and more.

The fastest way to become involved in the economy is by going through the Economy Tutorial. This tutorial (actually a series of missions) begins with the mission The Economy: Starting Out, and is picked up on the dock in your nation's starting port. The missions will walk you through creating a Warehouse, building your first Production Line, and creating some basic goods from these Structures.
