Starting at the Beginning
Live events are additional game content that we provide to players of Pirates of the Burning Sea to take part in. Live events are based around how you as a player
interact with various Event Characters and your fellow players. The exact content of these events vary in order to appeal to different playing styles within the game. This varies from all-out PvP battles, to role-playing.
Finding out about an Event
Event notices will come in a number of forms:
- A News Article ~ this will be the main overview of key details regarding the event. All other event notices will generally point you to these articles.
Think Ahead
Give yourself time to get ready. Like a port battle, make sure you have everything you want in time for the start of the event. If the port where the event is starting is in a PvP zone, make sure you get there early. Waiting until a few minutes before an event is likely to have you jumped by players wanting to take advantage of the large numbers converging on the ports.
Check if the news article describes the sort of event you would like to be involved in. If you want pure combat, don't go to role-playing events; likewise for role-playing don't go to pure combat events.
Taking Part
Live Events are all about giving you as the player something unique to take part in. Being properly prepared beforehand helps greatly in this regard and ensures that you don't end up feeling left out or annoyed as you can't take part as fully as you wished.
Requirements
The best way to compare the event requirements are to those of a mission. If you don't read all the details in the news article, they you could end up struggling. Following are a short list of questions that are asked by the players who want to take part:
- Must I be level 50 to take part? Not at all! A large number of our events are being designed to be available to all levels of player. We will make you aware of if there is a level requirement in the news article.
- Will there be combat in the events? There is the possibility of both ship combat and avatar combat within the events, however we will make you aware of this in the news announcement for an event.
- What will happen at the event? You can find some clues from the event description, and the Event Type info box, but usually you have to wait and see! We also occasionally put clues to the event on the Events Twitter, so keep an eye on there!
Warnings
The warnings in the news articles are designed to make you aware of how potentially risky an event may be to you if you take part.
- What is a High Risk Warning? This means there is a high chance that you could lose your ship / items in a fight against an NPC, another player or an event character. If this is the case, we will post a high risk warning within the news article announcing the event.
- What is a Low Risk Warning? This means there will be very little risk of losing your ship / items if you take part. Participants will still have the normal level of risk associated with playing the game though, so don’t forget to watch out for those red circles! For these events, we will attach a low risk notice to the news article.
During the Event
So you've got yourself ready and you're waiting at the starting location for the event. There are some additional details that are important during the event that will help your event go smoothly.
- Who do I talk to? During the events, you will most likely be spoken to by an Event Character. They will be marked by two titles, "LIVE EVENT CHARACTER" and "PotBS Game Master".
- Listen to instructions: We will often give out information during an event, yet we will generally only relay key details on system chat. If you are unsure, feel free to ask the Event Character to repeat the information.
- Chat Etiquette: Try not to spam chat with things not in line with the event. Role-play is great and what we want but try to be sensible about it and consider other players who have also come along to enjoy the event!
- Be Patient: Although we have a script to follow we often need to improvise or trade rewards or items with you. If there is a lot of you it will take time to get to each of you. Please remember that we're working as quickly as possible and remember to follow the instructions of the Event Characters to speed things up.
The End of the Event
We often use the end of the events to hand out any additional rewards for taking part. However, there are some additional pointers that are probably well worth noting:
- Will I be compensated for losing ships / items? We will not be compensating any player for loss of ship durability or items due to an event. Prepare yourselves accordingly beforehand by reading the warning levels in the news articles and following other details in this guide.
- How do I receive my reward from an event? All you need to do if you were missed during an event (for whatever reason) is to send a forum PM to Aegir, stating the character that took part in the event and the reward you missed.
