Societies (Getting a New Ship)

Besides buying ships, so far we've discussed stealing ships and getting free default ships. Consider though if someone were to simply give you free ships. There are a number of ways this can happen, but they all revolve around Societies.

Societies (Getting a New Ship) is part of the guide: Getting a New Ship. This guide contains the following topics:

What is a Society

If you want a new ship, ask your higher level friends. If you don't have higher level friends, make some by joining a society. Think of a society as a self-run organization of players. Society members are all part of the same Nation, but generally have members of all Careers. There are also several societies per Nation.

Societies are more than just a group of friends. You will most likely find that Pirates of the Burning Sea™ is the most fun when you play with other players. Societies facilitate just that type of play.

If you need to get players together to complete a group mission, simply ask your society. Societies can also answer common questions about the Economy, Avatar Combat, etc.

How Societies are Run

Many big societies are basically communist: everyone contributes and everyone shares the rewards. The goal is to promote every member of the society, making the whole society stronger rather than a single individual. Low level players are not expected to contribute the same amount as high level players, so simply by joining a society, members will likely give you free ships and all that you need to level up. Of course many societies may be more capitalistic, and will only trade or sell ships to you.

Some societies may have different requirements for membership, such as requiring you to contribute economically before they will share resources with you. Keep this in mind when considering societies.

Joining a Society

So you want to join a society. Well, there are number of ways to find a society to join. There are also societies that focus on different aspects of play (e.g., Player vs. Player, Economy, and Role Playing). So make sure to join a society that suits you.

Find a Society

Find a society:

  • Using NationChat—one simple way to find a society is just to ask your Nationif any societies are recruiting. You can use NationChat simply by selecting Nation on your Chat window.
  • On the forums—the official Pirates of the Burning Sea™ forums. On the forums, each server has its own section for society recruiting—these sections are called Society Recruitment. Here you can see a list of the various societies on your server or post a request, looking for a society.

Types of Societies

There are various aspects of play available in Pirates of the Burning Sea™. Different societies focus on different aspects of play. The two most common terms for play styles that will come up during your society search are listed here:

  • Player vs. Player—also known as PvP, this type of play is based mainly on port battles (24 vs. 24 battles) or ad-hoc battles on the Open Sea. These societies usually have a self-contained Economy to fuel the expensive nature of their style of play. Because their Economy is self-contained, the players who are involved producing goods do not usually make a profit, but rather sell goods at cost or give them away for free. These players typically earn doubloons through missions and by battling NPCs (Non-Player Characters) on the Open Sea. Players who enjoy pitting themselves in combat against other players will enjoy this type of society.
  • Role Playing—also known as RP, this style of play is probably best for history junkies. Societies who participate in this style of play encourage RP events, where players meet to act out a historical event (or create one). These societies enjoy making their language and style of dress as period accurate as possible. Often there are players who participate in RP within societies that are not directly focused on RP.

Befriending a Society

Many societies have such a successful Economy that they can help out other players who are not members of their society. Players who join societies often prefer the social aspects of the game, and so they are often more than willing to help out another player, regardless of their alliances. If you have questions, try asking members of large society.

Find Friendly Society Members

  • Ask on NationChat—if you need a new ship, you might try just asking over NationChat. Players are often happy to help low level players. You can use NationChat simply by selecting Nation on your Chat window.
  • Watch NationChat—by watching NationChat you can learn quite a bit about who the important players and societies are on your server. You will most likely notice a player or society that stands out by often offering help to new players.
  • Read the forums—the official Pirates of the Burning Sea™ forums. Each server has its own section on the forums. Read the section for your server. You will more than likely notice events where societies regularly help out new players, regardless of their affiliations. Take advantage of these events.
