Talk to Alonsico Atienza to find out about The Thief of Pride.

left quote
Captain [your name], thank God I've found you. You have a reputation for accomplishing the impossible, and what I intend to ask of you may be just that.
Through channels I hesitate to mention I recently came into possession of a truly remarkable artifact—the actual crown of thorns which adorned the head of Christ when He was crucified. I have no doubt as to its authenticity, for none other than the—well, shall we say, the most noted experts in the field of theology have confirmed it is the true crown. And now, despite my best efforts to protect it, the crown has been stolen!
I went to examine it just yesterday and discovered this note left in its place: 'Sr. Atienza, I have taken what is mine by right. Do not attempt to pursue me, for you have been judged unworthy to possess the crown.' It goes on like that for awhile, but the gist is that I—I, Don Alonsico Atienza!—am not worthy to hold the crown of Christ. And it is signed, 'The Thief of Pride.'
What can this mean, Captain? Who is this so-called 'Thief of Pride,' and who is he to deem me unworthy of anything? The only clue I have been able to discern is the reference to pursuit—clearly he intends to flee with his stolen relic—and there's only one ship readying to depart Gibara right now. If you hurry, you can catch them and find that crown.
—Alonsico Atienza

Recapture the Crown

Once your ship arrives in Plummet Point (near Gibara), you will notice a few ships in front of you—go talk to the Spanish Privateer Merchantman.

Spanish Privateer Merchantman: "It's that infernal [your name]—Don Alonsico must have discovered us! Make all sail, men. The Thief will have our heads if we don't return his prize"
You: "Prepare to be boarded, you despicable crown-snatchers!"

Click on the Merchantman to board his ship. Defeat his hired guns, and talk to the Captain.

Privateer Captain: "You should not have followed us, [your name]. My master sought no quarrel with you."
You: "Too bad for him, because he's got one. Now give me that crown, and I'll consider letting you sail out of here still in command of your own quarterdeck."
Privateer Captain: "You do not understand the Thief... one does not disappoint a god who walks the Earth, Captain. Perhaps you will learn that in the next life."

Collect Your Rewards

Talk to Rosalinda Pelayo to collect your reward.
Rosalinda Pelayo is located near the Magistrate's Office.

Once the Captain is defeated, leave the mission. Return to Alonsico Atienza (he will still be standing at the end of the dock, across the street).

Alonsico Atienza: "Oh, it's you! Ever since you departed I've been expecting a visit from the Spanish Inquisition—and few things are less pleasant than expecting a visit from the Spanish Inquisition. Do you have... the item?"
You: "I have it right here, and I suggest you either put it in a safer place or give it to someone who can prevent thieves from taking it. A lot of blood has been spilled over this crown today."
Alonsico Atienza: "Blood has been spilled over such things for centuries Captain, or I will be able to ever put a stop to that—still, I accept your good advice in the spirit it was intended
I have a message to pass along, by the way. My friend, Lady Rosalinda Pelayo, is hoping to engage your services next. She, too, has received a letter from this Thief of Pride, and I can't believe it is a coincidence. Be cautious, my friend. I trust Lady Pelayo, but something about this Thief gives me pause. So much heresy these days, so little faith..."

Talk to Rosalinda Pelayo to collect your reward—her location will be marked on your map.

Rosalinda Pelayo: "[your name]? Captain [your name]?"
You: "That's me. Lady Pelayo, I presume?"
Rosalinda Pelayo: "Oh, thank the sweet Lord you have found me, Captain! It is terrible, just terrible. My home! The Thief of Pride has taken over my home, and all of the magnificent art I possess! Why? Why, I ask you?"

You will be rewarded with Gold 1670 doubloons and at least Experience 800 points.
